I would be willing to bet it lost spark as a way for the computer to
make sure it didn't fire and run off any fuel left in the bowls of the carbs or in the lined or holes. This way you can't simply run a hot wire to the fuel pump. Just a secondary safety.

Yep, ECU must sense the injector.  No Injector, then it turns off fuel and spark.  Weird that it wouldn't throw a code though.
