I spent the extra $$$ and got LED bulbs. Glad I did. Espically up here in the cold climates. It has no effect.

So I picked up a T-8 4' light and 2 4' LED bulbs.  Instant on and bright as sun even at 25*.  $40 for the fixture and 2 bulbs.  Bulbs wouldn't work in exsisting fixture!  Quite happy so far.  Will replace as bulbs fail, which looks to be quickly.

if you Don't have a Sam's .. Walmart might have them..

Home depot has a similar one single row 35 watt 4000 lumens for about 38$
For some damn reason led's that hard wire are 180$ vs the nearly identical counterpart with a 110v plug for 30-60$

I bought mine at Home Depot.  $20 fixtire (out of white $16 that day)
Fixture http://www.lynxae.co.uk/Products-Bikesports.htm

Bulb http://www.homedepot.com/p/Philips-4-ft-T8-17-Watt-Daylight-Linear-LED-Light-Bulb-456608/206278132

So about same money, but 4200 lumens.  Happy with it just need a few more.

The cfl's I used are 5800 lumens and less than 1/2 the price. I decided against the LEDs for our new showroom/office building due to the fact LEDs are not yet up to par with cfl's. It would have taken a third more fixtures for me to have gotten the same light in the building. Then there's the lux difference.  For me,at least for now, cfl's are my choice. Ya,it takes all of 5 minutes for them to come up to full light output. I can live with that .  WHEN LEDs come "of age" and are an equal to conventional lighting I'll make the change then.

Speaking of conventional......  The incandescent is not dead.  MIT figured a way to make them more energy efficient than leds.  Wonder how quickly this will come to market?

http://www.fastcoexist.com/3055440/all-hail-the-new-incandescent-light-bulb-efficient-as-an-led-bulb

Purdue is working on a bulb as well.

http://wlfi.com/2016/01/24/purdue-professor-inventing-a-new-incandescent-light-bulb/

Between the mirror and the photon approach, incandescent will be back as the next "big thing."

Still happy with the LED retrofits.

Fabr, LEDS will not "come of age" and be like "conventional"  Leds are not full spectrum.

that first link yummi posted is an interesting read. they have some pretty high hopes and i hope they hit them. i have the florescent 8' tubes in my garage/shop. 5 fixtures ...3 of which are 76 watt dual's and 2 100 watt duals...diff ballasts. i found a seller of the led light to replace mine. $27 each with a life expectancy of 45000 hrs but out of stock of the frosted ones. i have to have the frosted ones otherwise it hurts my eyes and the hardest thing to find is led bulbs for the house that are around 3500k rather than 5000 to 6000k those are waaaaaaay to bright and pure white that also is very annoying! in the shop bright white doesn't bother me especially since it's 10' off the ground.

Weird, i got rid of "cool white" leds and opted for the 5100's as I like em better.  We each like what we like I guess?

I added up the cost to replace my T8's with the newer LED bulbs.  The fixtures are 8' with 4 x 4' bulbs each.  With 26 fixtures, 104 bulbs, that would be over $1,000.  I think I will have to wait till these all burn out.  They will get cheaper as you guys keep buying them, so buy up!

nice shop mitch and the 8 foot t8 or t12 can be found on ebay for $27 each in led so add that up with your existing 8 footers

yummin.....the 5 to 6k color actually hurt my eyes being snow blinding white. in the shop it's great shining down from a 10 foot ceiling but in the house i can't stand it. it's too bright for me.
