I have a old Kawasaki bayou 4 wheeler that is still in good running order and was wondering if it could be used to build a mini buggy. I would like to build a 2 seater buggy and wondered if there is any frame plans that are just for this kind of build and what may be involved in such a build.
-
No reason it can't be done. Seen a few builds like that but I know of no plans.
-
No plans that I'm aware of. What do you plan on doing with the buggy? Sand,Trail or?
-
basically what "Ridgerunner" were doing before they went out of business.
Google Ridgerunner for images, and go from there, hopefully inspired

Found this site www.atvrideronline.com/newsfront/100_0406_new_two_seat_atv. I think it need more of a cage over and around the occupants. Looks like a go utility but not for sport. If you roll that thing you way to in the open for me.

The Picture ZDunebound posted is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Even if not the people riding will likely be hurt or killed.
That roll bar has no forward or backwards support and no x brace.
Yet because its there some fool will drive the machine like he stole it and the manufacturer will be liable.
In this case they ought to be IMO.
No reason for no X brace and tube running to the back for triangulation support.
There IS a company thats converts quads.
www.area51fabworks.com (http://www.area51fabworks.com)
But they only cater to certain quads I think. Check em out

That link sux.

I do have to agree on that now Fabr.
Last time I went there it was actually a site with info on the buggies.
They basically were making frames thats used the Quads rear swingaxle and the quads front suspension. it all jsut bolted on.
But it looks like they went belly up.
They were advertising in the back of SandSports magazine. Thats where I saw them.

Thanks for the info so far. I want to build this buggy for trail riding. I also agree about the ridgerunner. It needs alot more rider safety. I guess I would build something on the order of it but with a full roll bar cage. You never can be too safe.

With a few mods they'd be fine.

What would be the best way to widen the width of a shaft driven rear axle on the ATV axle I plan to use for my mini buggy my project? Could you extend the axle by mounting short shafts onto the wheel hubs or would this cause problems?
-
I doubt that would be a good idea. How much wider you need?
-
I not sure. I'm wanting to make a 2 seater buggy from a Kawasaki Bayou 4 wheeler and thought I would need a wider wheel base.
-
How wide is the bayou now? Got any pics of it so we can see what we're working with size wise?
-
I think the width of wheelbase is around 40" wide. I don't have any pics of my personal 4 wheeler but here is a pic of one I found on the net. I hope I attached the pic to this message right.
-
I think you could get away with just using maybe 3" wheel spacers and get 46" real east and be OK for a trails type 2 seater fine. I assume you meant 40" stock outside of tire to outside of tire?
-
A two seater for kids or adults? I usually plan on 18-20" of hip room and I'm not that big of a guy. That's also for a single seater. You put two people side by side and you need elbow room too.
-
The differential is offset to the left side and has a short axle tube and a long axle tube. What I have in mind is to shorten long tube and axle the same as the short tube and axle. Then center the diff. which will offset the engine some but that will give me room for a battery or something beside engine. After centering the diff. with the short axles, would it be possible to use a CV jointed axles and attach it to the short axles on the diff.? This would give me the width on the wheelbase I would want for my buggy. I think I made this as clear as mud.

You COULD do that but you will severely limit the amount of suspension travel.
