Triangled support
« on: August 12, 2015, 07:32:42 AM »
On the road and can't get a pic and no way to draw on my phone.

On the side rails of this thing I'm building I only have room for a single diagonal set of supports from top rail to bottom rail.

Question is... Better to start in the middle of the top rail and go down diagonally to corners of A pillar to the B pillar or center bottom and up to top rail corners.

Understand ?

Probably misunderstanding but single diagonals should go from corner to corner.

Again,maybe not following correct but a single v would be effectively creating 3 triangles. Should be fine.

right side up or upside down doesn't matter but the sharp? part of the "V" should not be in the middle span of a tube (otherwise the tube you weld the point of the "V" to just bends when the "V" pushes on it).  Corner to corner is best (strongest)..........

I does matter depending on where the input load is coming from. In your example,can you designate where the load is being applied? If you are just wanting a strong square/rectangle,then as Lance said corner to corner is stronger but still the direction of applied load would dictate which corner to corner would be strongest.

let me see....

It's like a full caged and suspended wagon that is about 4' long and 30" wide. The distance between the A pillar and B pillar is about 30" front to back and 23" across. There will be a cooler that could weigh 80# hanging from the bottom rail in the center of the chassis. The bottom rail and top rail are only about 10" apart so I'm not even sure I need any extra support. However, since the top and bottom rail are not connected in the span between the A and B pillar, I just want to make sure it doesn't pull the bottom rail down or worse have the entire thing fold up.

If it matters in your thoughts, there will be about 60# hanging from the top of the cage down where someone would normally sit. It will be holding a BBQ and solar panel.

Thanks for helping.

Is this what I think it is DW?  Will it have a thingamajig and some yippydy-ki-I-o's and Roll?  If so it's about time you got a start on it.   rofl rofl

If I believe I cannot do something it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe that I can, then I acquire the ability to do it , even if I didn't have it at the beginning.
