when i was younger, my machine shop mentor guy let me spline a shaft i needed for my shaft drive motorcycle/3-wheeler...  i remmeber a unit that held those disks with the holes, and i stuck the shaft in it, and his booklet told him how many turns and which holes each turn to make, then i had to crank the cutter over to cut the spline..  turn and cut, turn and cut..
