How do you find correct 930 axle length?
« on: June 29, 2010, 09:30:39 AM »
Well guys,

I'm at the point where I need to purchase some 300m 930 axles, but I'm not exactly sure what length to order.  Can anyone give me the correct procedure to find the length of axle needed.

From CV mounting flange to CV mounting flange I have 22 15/16".  To clearify, when I say CV mounting flange, I mean the flange that the CV mounts to, not the actual CV itself.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Adam, You will not need 300m axles. 4130 HT will be plenty strong.

Buy some 23" long Axles as thats what I use.

I did some searching, and asking around online, I found out how to calculate axle length.  Take the distance from cup to cup (longest distance) when the cups are horizontal with each other, and then subtract an inch.  I got this method from three different suppliers of axles.

So using this method I need 23 3/4" axles.

You used 1/2" heim joints on the lower "A-Arms" I opted for the 3/4" for a little more beef, and that set my rear upright out a little farther.  As for 300m or 4130,  will the 4130 handle 150 ft/lbs of torque?  Just wondering, because that v-twin wont be in that buggy forever.  Maybe a turbo'd inline 4 in the next couple of years.  I just don't want to have to buy more than on pair of axles.

Thanks for the input guys ;)

Well, I take my 2 piece axle, stick and cycle it to find the shortest distance. Then I subtract about 1/8" and order the next size up axle. When they get here I cut them to length.........

Some cups are deeper than others and will take a longer axle. You really need to have a 2 piece set-up axle to check this.......

Nope... I used 5/8" and any bigger may foul on your rim, I actually use 3/4 on the upper arm as well. The 23" axles I use are also shortened a little although the 23" left alone will work OK. 23.75" will be too long for your application if built to plans (somewhat) or built the way I remember you had built it. No loss though if you decide to buy the 24" as you can always shorten them.

BTW... Plan on spending at least $500 for a pair of 300M axles.

The regular SA axles are good to about 300FLTB's. You'll start popping cages before you snap an axle........

I remember reading somewhere that the Edge axles are 300M, how long are they?

They are just shy of 23" if I remember right.

Edge shafts were definatly not 300m.  I have bought 2 pair from Edge and the tooling marks and finish on the splines were the worst I have ever seen on any spline ever. Sorry, just the truth.

if you subtract an inch how do you put the c-clips on? I would think you would add 1/2" to the cup measurement. it really comes down to how much plunge you are going to have in what ever style rear drive.
