Radiator burp tank
« on: June 09, 2010, 05:46:38 PM »
I am in need of one I found This on bay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Overflow-Tank-3-x-8-Stainless-Radiator-NEW-3-x8-/200461409377?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2eac6e5c6 1  not sure if it will work with my radiator (honda del sol). Meaning i do not understand the way it would work. I understand the fluid flows in the top end and out the bottom (pecock) . But what happens to the pressure ( that caused the fluid to expand) would it not just build up blow a hose.

Ya got to vent 'em.  The one I built for my civic had the line from the radiator running to the bottom of the tank and then a vent and cap out the top.  From what I remember, hondas reclaim the coolant as they cool down.  That would depend more on the radiator and cap than the vehicle it's in.

That is what i thought. Just below the radiator cap is the flow line that would go to he overflow tank. so there is no way to make that tank work. Does anyone know were to get  a good overflow tank that is not for a pressurized system? The only stuff i am finding is plastic.

This looks like the one, holds way more then i need. But it the only thing i can find (in my web search) that has a pressure release cap.

Thank Guys you always come though

Sure you can make it work. The radiator cap holds the pressure in the radiator. Thje caps function is to allow the excess pressure/coolant to bleed off into the overflow tank. If the tank you are looking at has no dip  tube you need run the line to the bottom of the tank. If the tank is unvented just drill a .060" hole to allow venting. You will have coolant recovery on cool down and automatic purging of trapped air when warming up doing it that way.

I just installed the new tank and  was wondering if  i should rip the guts out of the new pressure cap for the burp tank so it is not a pressureized tank. I do not know the pressure release for the new cap. (I am leading toward guting the cap) I do realize if i do that there could be a little spillage though the overflow tube (that is not a big deal to me)

If you want it to work effectively as a coolant recovery tank then you will need to something of the sort. Make sure that  the rad cap is a recovery type and I assume the burp tank has a bottom inlet/outlet?

The only opening i am using is the bottom one. The recovery tank is mounted higher then the radiator. So when ever i check the fluid level i need to clamp off the hose going to the recovery tank so it does not drain completely. I will try to post a pic soon.

You should leave the radiator cap on the radiator  except for initial filling and use the burp tank to maintain a full radiator. After a couple of cyclings of heat/cooldown there will be no air anywhere in the radiatoir or line to burp tank. You don't want to disturb that.
