Title: St Anthony's Idaho Aug 5-9 2024 Group Ride Days
Post by: Generalg on July 04, 2023, 10:43:44 AM
I vote we plan a trip for 2024 or 2025 for a big group ride. To me St Anthony's is better than Glamis.

My fuel tank in the buggy is 20 gallons.  I was able to make it to Choke and Devil's Dune and back if I took it easy on the way out.  However once the tank was below 30% I started seeing lots of fuel pressure drops with the fuel sloshing so much.  Plan to add a surge tank gravity fed from the main tank now. The sump I put on the main tank wasn't large enough to compensate. Always something to add or change but that's the fun part.... Sometimes.

I'm up for group trip.  I'm thinking early fall/late summer 24. I want time to fully prove out the new engine first.

You really should/might consider Holley Hydramat instead of a surge tank. Pricy but really the best way. I'm going to do that soon. I want to be able to use every last drop of my 27 gallons without even a hint of a pressure drop. Hydramat has been around now for near 10 years and pretty well proven to work as claimed.

I've been looking at St.A usual/normal temps both day /night. Looks like a window of mid July to mid August would make for the best with a couple weeks either side being likely good warm days with cool nights.  Opinions?

The only 2 times we have gone was during the first 2 weeks of aug. Only time of year I can take a full week off as well. Both trips were great weather imo.

Late July or August works.... I will make it work.  8)

First time in 2020 we arrived Memorial day weekend staying into June.  On the way home a snowstorm rolled through Laramie 8hrs after we drove through.

I don't remember what time of year it was but one trip i spent the 4 days there in the toter watching TV since it was low 40's and a constant mist. Eff that. Now with heated seats and buggy heat I think it would be fun. :m  Anyhow, I can make any dates work. Need to get some input from the rest of the group.

So i will take a full week off for that trip. I will leave easier Friday after work or 4:30 am sat morning. I will haul up on a flat bed and rent a camper. I will have my new 28' full width deck flat bed low boy GN by then. Might be ready this weekend.  I ordered it from kaufman trailers as they have a manufacturing plant 2 hrs from me in beaver city neb. So there is a possibility that enemy and I might load both on That  trailer and iron man a non stop drive  ;)

I am really hoping to make this trip.  I need a new motor in the buggy (this winter) and a new tow vehicle (next spring).

New motor? What happened?

So are you trading up on the motor home or going to flat bed it up?

Speaking of weed eaters and boost,a friends weedeater wouldn't run right. It was a 2 stroke. One of those that has everything covered with plastic. Before I dove into it I told him it was likely the exhaust plugged with carbon. He insisted it was worn out and needed thrown away. To prove the point I aimed the air hose at the carb and that thing went from barely running into a top fueler. That thing probably hit 20K rpm easily. Sounded cool as hell too. Blowing sparks out of the muffler like crazy. I swear it could have wacked an oak tree down.Anyway I cleaned the muffler of crud and it ran like new again. I wonder if they make a small enough turbo for one........... :m

Post by: dsrace on July 09, 2023, 09:10:51 AM
i bet that did spin it over top rpm!  :m

i have no idea if they do but i wouldn't be surprised if there was one.  probably made for remote control planes that use chainsaw or weed eater engines.

Try it some time. The fricken thing sounded like a Formula 1. Just point the blow gun into the carb inlet. Boost it to about 90 psi.Even Glenn didn't compound boost his stuff that far. LOL. Damn I miss that guy.

Approx date of first 2 weeks of August. We will narrow that down later according to needs.

I assume at least 4 days at dunes ?

I'm in.
What works logically for me is to take the first 7 work days off in August '24.
I would leave for SA on the 1st and have till the 9th to ride all the dunes I can.
I can make whatever is decided work although..
Have a nice day.

Ready to ride from the 3-9th? I kind of like that idea. Some may need to make it shorter but still be able to ride as a group for the most part either at the first or last of those days. I'd likely drive out weekend of 3 and 4th an back the weekend of 10th and eleventh and ride the days of 5-9th. 5 days of riding is good for me.

OPINIONS??

The first 2 weeks of aug are the only dates that work for myself work wise. I say this as I will take the whole week off. Either head out Friday after work or wait and leave early Sat morning. If I and Jon are able to drive 1 truck and tow both on my gn flat bed then we might just iron man it non stop. If not then sun arrival for sure.    All of that is Dependent on a number of factors of .course. first and foremost, the out come pertaining to my rt eye. Completion of rail and one solid LS trip with out warping the exh manifold.  I know the hv 24 trans won't blow up with this combo.

Other then that, yes those dates will work.

Once the dates are set in stone I'll be reserving a campsite or just wing it and dry camp...  Usually The Sand Showdown takes place the first week of August. Hopefully avoid that in 2024 with the dates we settle on.

The website doesn't go out to Aug24 yet , just till the end of July. I'm thinking along the lines you are Grant, the sooner we say the dates are set we had better reserve our spots. With that said I'd say we give it till the end of this month for the remaining guys to speak or forever hold their peace and the Aug 24 online reservations should be available then.   Personally I'm good with the dates. I think I'll take the toter with flatbed this time. Much easier getting over the divide especially coming back. LOL!!!

It appears that they do that on Fri and Saturday and only invade the dunes Saturday IF they do as this year. They wouldn't be a bother if so with the dates we have to ride,M-F.

I emailed an inquiry about reserving for our trip . Here is the reply.

"Our reservations are handled through our website. The sites are reservable
370 days in advance. I would hop onto the website Aug 1 of this year, and
you should be able to make a reservation for next year. If you have any
questions, feel free to contact us."

I'm thinking we need to start trying about July 27th. I have my eye on my favorite spot.

Idaho Dunes RV has added additional full Hookups to the campground.  That's great but the price has been raised again!  $78-$104 / night!  I would expect a continental breakfast at least for these campground fees.  At least dry camping is still the same.  I'm thinking of maybe trying Egin Lakes / BLM but never have stayed there.  $60-$25 per night at Egin.

Egin lakes does take reservations now, at least they did last year however they open up the reservations at certain times.  All else fails I'll just plan on dry camping at Dunes RV.

What about the Sandhills campground? Did their price jump too?

Long ride from Sand Hills to the big dunes.  I just reserved the Idaho Dunes spot 5 for the nights of 8/4-8/9  full hook ups. Not doing partial hookups for 6 nights. The spots are already about 1/2 reserved. I'd get it done if you are going to do it.

Definitely a long ride but curious if their fees went up too.

Unless a person just enjoys the long ride it really doesn't matter the cost.  They haven't posted prices for next year on their site unless I missed it.

I cannot at this time as I do not a proven ride. That might change soon enough. Ut until such time I just cannot commit.

My rt eye has regressed a tad as well . Had another injection into the eye and will be 2 more in the next couple months. The last shot cleared the issue up again but the shots may become routine.

I still plan on going, but I just have a few hurdles.  Putting a new engine together now (or the clean up stage really).  New dual BB turbo, oh yea baby.   8)  So that one will be sorted.  I'll make it   :nw

I'll be putting the 427SBC  in the buggy this next week after doing mods to the dry sump oil pan to make the oil lines configuration same as the 360 oil pan to simplify future engine swaps. Woohoo.

That is good news! I hope that goes seamlessly.

Made reservations for Egin Campground for site B14 and B15 (Brian J) August 4-10th.   Couldn't resist the $38 per night for 50 amp service, vs what IDRV is charging now.  Never stayed at Egin, hopefully will be good. At least this campground is closer to the "BIG" dunes and not having to dodge so much lava rock all the time...

As of last night there was still spots B17, B19 and B22 for that week if anyone is thinking of reserving.

Reservations are refundable as well if needed.

Didn't know those blm spot were reservable now. Good information  to know. I won't know my availability until after I get the rail tested and past my next eye appointments.

Same boat here, except for the new motor.. and turbo.. But I got a new header!
Beat the shit out of it by the Platte yesterday then did a re-torque on the hot stuff, need to make a couple new exhaust mounts and should be dialed.
