New drop axle ice house
« on: December 07, 2014, 08:13:57 AM »
Plan on building a 6.5'x10' drop axle ice house like the one pictured. Going to use aluminum siding with pop rivets holding it on. What should I use on the seams? Is there a special silicone or tape?

Cool project. Will the aluminum  be raw or painted?

The frame will be unpainted, the sheet of alu will be painted. Getting 4'x10' sheets for $75 each

DAP makes a sealant called 920. I would suggest it or Sika 1A

No, but I do use it to mount my Replay vid cameras. That stuff just plain WORKS for sure. Not sure about it on raw aluminum though.

If the alum is unpainted, is there different silicone to use? Also trying to figure out what thickness of alum to get. My stud spacing is 16" on center. I'll be applying the sheet alum onto the alum studs, then spray foaming the whole thing. Any recommendations for roof product? Will there be any warping or flexing without plywood backing?

Once the foam is in place warping of the skin will pretty much not be an issue. Till then it WILL be with temperature changes. Personally I would suggest the use of standard painted steel roofing panels and the foam. They will stay straight and will likely weigh less than any aluminum skin that would need to be thicker to have any chance of staying flat. Likely cost less and weigh less also. The stuff covers 36" and ,in Kansas,I sell it for under $2 a linear foot.   29ga. material would be great for your project. Lots of trim accessories to finish out the project are readily available .

With the panels I suggested there would be no sealant needed.
