Welcome to the board Southernford;  How far of a range do you want, and what type of terrain?  I am confident some of the Busa folks here can help you figure it out.

I don't run a busa, I run thirsty 3cyl 2 strokes IMHO I'd say nothing less that 7 gallons, anything smaller it seems your always going back to camp for fuel...Welcome to the site BTW

If you are making a fuel tank don't put any fittings on the bottom.
A failure in a hose or hose clamp will empty the entire tank in your garage or trailer.

thanks guy
my range im looking for is far as posible
mild terrain also paved roads
Title: Re: fuel tanks
Post by: SPEC on December 26, 2008, 08:34:45 AM
I guess then I'd build the biggest tank that would fit 8)
I wasn't being smart, but I build my own tanks from scratch...Put the bungs close to the bottom of the tank so if the hose/clamp fails it is an easy fix...not tearing the tank down to get the pick up hose out :(

Post by: southernford246 on December 26, 2008, 09:06:05 AM
i know im making my own fuel slump in the middle at the bottom but im using a hard line from the tank to by the motor then i am using braided steel line to the motor from that point

do you think that will work good?

Here are some of my custom Tanks Ive built. They are about 4.5 to 6 Gal and I seem to run out sooner than Id like.

I agree with some posts above... As big as the buggy will allow.

I always put the pick up at the lowest point of tha tank to get out as much fuel as possible, without picking up all the crap that ends up at the bottom.
Hard lines tend to stress and crack from vibration, You might consider all braided with a few grounding straps, safety 1st, Some of the stuff I left out of the 1st post is baffling to keep fuel slosh down, filler neck breathers, roll over valves...so the fuel doesn't all run out all over you if you put it on the roof...And of course the fuel tank foam...This pretty much eliminates all fuel slosh...

That is a big tank!  That would give you well over a 500 mile range.  Full, the fuel would weigh around 180 pounds.  For myself I would use a maximum size around 10-12 gallons, unless you run way out in the wilderness, or dessert.

Good point Engineer,
Kinda touph to dial in the suspension for that weight, like driving solo in a 2 seater

ya i fogot to add the thickness of the metal so its goin to be lower than that.

what is the weight of a gallon of gas?
Title: Re: fuel tanks
Post by: SPEC on December 26, 2008, 10:15:36 AM
About 8# I think 8.8 Or is that water?
Title: Re: fuel tanks
Post by: southernford246 on December 26, 2008, 10:43:12 AM
water is 8.33 lbs per gallon
Title: Re: fuel tanks
Post by: Engineer on December 26, 2008, 11:03:07 AM
Around 6.25 lb/gallon.  It depends on the type of gas.

The stock busa holds 22 Liters, or 5.81 gallons.  You can ride quite a while on a full tank.  Of course you won't go as far or as fast in the buggy cause of the extra weight.

8-12 gals is nice size/weight.The busa gets decent milage BUT when you are geared twice as low and are pulling twice the weight as the bike and are always on the throttle you are gonna get crappy mileage.Around 10 MPG or so.

how dose this sound i caculated the weight of my fuel tank with fuel and it came out to 128lbs is that to much??
Title: Re: fuel tanks
Post by: fabr on December 28, 2008, 07:30:03 PM
How far you plan to ride at a time? Approx 19 gals is a lot of fuel to carry.Takes up a bunch of space also!!!
Title: Re: fuel tanks

the fuel is only 14 gallons and im using 12 gauge steet (.109)

that's a helluva lot of fuel, and the weight of another passenger.  My civic only holds like 10 gal. and I could get 300 to 400 miles out of it.

i might have a mock tank later on today

Before worrying about a tank I'd suggest you make sure that everything else is mounted first. You'll be amazed at how quickly space you thought was there  will disappear.

quick question, where do you guys get your filler necks with the plastic caps, and your bungs for the fittings? steel preferably..
Title: Re: fuel tanks
Post by: southernford246 on December 30, 2008, 12:51:10 PM
summitracing.com has them or you can make your own filler tube out of some tube and cut off an extra car fill neck
Title: Re: fuel tanks
Post by: Doug Heim on January 01, 2009, 10:19:44 PM
I make them and can make it out of any material. The weld bungs are easy! Just let me know what you need.

To see a pic of the filler neck I make look in my section or click on my sponsorship link and click on the appropriate thread.

Thanks

This is quite possibly THE WORST way to do a tank. Having a cutout for the exhaust? Super dangerous and YUK!!!

is it just me?

Heated fuel is less dense so the buggy will weigh less. What's wrong with that?

How hot do you think the sun will get it to?
Title: Re: fuel tanks
Post by: Yoshi on April 04, 2009, 07:09:39 AM
I run 15 gallons between (2) 7.5 gallon tanks, and in some cases, i'll run an extra 5 gallon with separate fuel pump and filter for race fuel (like i'm doing on a current build)
And in case your wondering, the hose is a sight glass so I can see the fuel level......

Title: Re: fuel tanks
Post by: SPEC on April 04, 2009, 07:15:51 AM
I do all mine sight glass too
Cheap...never malfunctions
Title: Re: fuel tanks

Were you after someone to do the tank for you?
Title: Re: fuel tanks
Post by: Admin on June 01, 2009, 08:45:50 AM
When building custom tanks your much farther ahead to weld a small square plate to the tank, then weld the tab on, for some reason a directly welded tab will tend to crack at the weld, the patch underneath it tends to spread the load and minimize any chance to crack... if the weld at the tab does crack, it only cracks the patch plate and not the liquid tank then...
Title: Re: fuel tanks
Post by: Voodoochikin04 on June 01, 2009, 05:39:43 PM
so whats the popular metal to use? aluminum? steel? stainles steel? thickness? best way to attatch fittings for a sight tube? when gravity fed, flat bottom? rounded? brass fittings? welded in threded bungs? just drill and thread holes in the plate work?  that should help clear things up
Title: Re: fuel tanks
Post by: Admin on June 01, 2009, 06:04:23 PM
IMO, alum only, weld alum plates anywhere you weld a tab or attachment point, weld 1/2 thick plates anywhere you want a bung, drill the hole in the tank larger than the bung hole and tap the plate prior to installation, rubber mount the entire gas tank... Sight tube is easy, weld a bung top and bottom for 1/8 pipe thread, put brass 90's on each and run a fuel proof "motorcycle gas line" hose to see, For visual aid you could install a fuel proof plastic ball in the hose as well...
Title: Re: fuel tanks
Post by: SPEC on June 02, 2009, 06:41:55 AM
uh OH...
Bug and I are going to butt heads again... ;D
I prefer steel tanks over plastic and aluminum...For several reasons
Plastic cracks and breaks the ear/mounting tabs in the cold of winter up here...I got 2 of them out in the shop that still hold gas but no mounting tabs, Aluminum are fine for the sand guys, I don't tig anymore, but have several aluminum tanks get stuff poked through them and they are not allowed by many sanctioning bodies for competition, Now before I get the"well im not racing it" let me say this...the sanctioning bodies have a reason for having a bladder and a steel enclosure....SAFETY..
I disagree with the welding thicker plates to the tanks for the bungs for a couple of reasons...!st is weld in bungs are cheap, and generally easier to install than messing around trying to weld 2 unlike thickness materials to contain a creeper liquid, 2 the thicker material vibrates at a slower rate than the thinner stuff and will crack eventually, unless it is rubber mounted, Bug does have a point on the mounting tabs and dispersing the energy tho
I usually brake the tabs to work around corners so the dispersion is on at least 2 planes on the tank...same as the battery boxes...I've never had one fail yet...
Just my take on tanks
Title: Re: fuel tanks
Post by: Admin on June 02, 2009, 07:01:22 AM
Goody Too shoes for you... Steel rusts and makes a mess... If you ever poke anything thru a 1/8 thick alum tank you doing good... ;D

not to meantion a 10 year old post. if you need a larger 100g tank for your landrover wouldn't a land rover forum be a great place to start or call a custom fuel tank shop and ask if they would be willing to build one.
