yes on filter, even bypased that and checked the pump while out there - no pressure.

does it have any sort of return line, maybe made to much pressure and burned it up?

sounds like it's locked for some reason.filter is before pump,correct?

Filter before pump - check.  Flushed lines?  Dont know, bought used.

Yummi, Master is asking if you flushed the lines when you changed the pump. Maybe there was stuff in the lines when you bought it and some of it burned up the original pump. Then you replaced the pump and more stuff from the line got into the new pump and froze it up also. Id pull the pump and bench test it it i was you. Maybe flush it out and see if you can get it to spin over. I used alligator clips to an extra battery i had laying around to bench test mine when it was giving me problems. Also....just an idea but are you sure its completly submerged in fuel?.Thats assuming its a tank pump. Or that its getting fuel to the pump constantly. I know i run one for about a minute out of the fuel and it locked up. They have to have fuel to them at all times or they can get hot and burn up. Just some ideas.

Did not flush the lines - did replace the filter.  Pump is inline and is mounted below the lowest point of the tank and there was plenty of fuel in the tank.   I will pull and bench test. 

Anybody have experience with the carter pumps re: Reliability?  Any ideas on which is more reliable than the other?

Are you using an EFI motor? Fuel injected? If so Walpro has some fuel pumps that are good quality and reasonable on price. What motor are you running? If not EFI you can run one of those inline pumps from auto parts for race motors for about 40 bux. Thats what i did when i had a carb'd motor.

2.0 subaru, fuel injected.  the carter was on the car, figured it was direct replacment, so went the same route.  likely need same specs as carter, or slightly higher.

Got an idea for you. Ditch the carter. Pick up a walpro 255 fuel pump. They are worth the money. Thats all i run on my turbo honda civics. My buddy has a sti subaru that runs a walpro 255 and runs like a champ. I research that and go that route. Or maybe find out what is the deal with the one you got. My bet is it is overworking itself. May not be able to handle the load the EFI is putting on it or maybe the efi is sucking all the fuel out of it faster than it can pump and therefore burning it up. If i was you i would find out first what the specs are on the carter and make sure it will handle the high demand and pressure required for FI. Compair the specs of it with the stock fuel pump. If its not up to par then got the walpro route. i know people here use the walpros on their buggies. Thats what i used before and what i will use on this build.
