keyed axles
« on: September 24, 2008, 11:14:43 AM »
in guidance from my machine shop guy (inspiration for my buggy) the original plan for my short axle was to put a keyway in the shaft and use keys for the sprocket, brake rotor, and axle hubs.  am i gonna have a problem with shearing them off?

tried that and it lasted about 45 mins in the desert. Splines are the only way. I sheared chromoly keyed and tid welded shafts.

What did you weld it for, that's probably your problem, Rowyco has used a key shaft in his jackshaft for 2 or 3 yrs now, maybe 4, minisprints run keyed stub axles....the key has to fit tight, no ifs ands or buts, and its better if the female side is split and can be tightened down on the key...With a busa, probably no fing way, a 600, its been done... ;D

Welded it to keep the drive flanges on and to add strength. I sheared 2 3/8 keys ans a tig weld all the way around the shaft ends. There were 2 key per side and the were machined to fit tight. Might work for small displacement cars

I used to use the keyed jack shafts from the donor sleds, They did work pretty well usually I had to weld the key slot and re-machine due to the lack of maintenance from the previous owners...They held up pretty well,
Most manufacturers have gone to splined jack shafts...There is a company that sells the splined shafts and the collars...But for the life of me I can't remember their name...I think you'll be fine with the keyed shaft I'd just keep a spare with you in the buggy just in case...
