WTH is wrong with this picture
« on: November 07, 2010, 11:57:23 AM »
What is going on here.  Have I lost my touch or has my welder taken a shit and gone south.  I have this tube cut on a lathe wire brushed, sanded and I am using Napa to clean it all before I weld it.  It is like I am trying to weld a sparkler and it keeps bubbling up and spitting out. Tig square wave 100* argon gas ER70S-2 1/16 wire filler rod. Never have had this problem before.  What's up.  First though that it was my new gas mix 75/25 Argon Helium so I took the bottle back and got a 100* Argon bottle.  Still having problems.  Has my welder gone south or what? Need to get these new transverse and trailing arms done and get this car back on the sand. Any one got any idea's.

If I believe I cannot do something it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe that I can, then I acquire the ability to do it , even if I didn't have it at the beginning.

Make sure you're in AC if that's ally.

the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a
loyalty to the American people."

What is the tube? Does it have a mill scale you don't see on the ID?

positive or negative setting? pull the cover off of the welder and make sure nothing has crawled up inside of it as a new home. The welder may need calibrating.

DC negative. And set for auto cleaning.  No unfriendly's inside the machine.  Calibrating?

Ya I wish.  This has been going on now for about a week.  Even welding alli it's like your trying to weld in DC the weld puddle looks all dark and will not melt together in a nice puddle like it should.

You think that blue boy you got is heavy this thing I got is twice that. Plus I haven't got a fork lift to handle it.  All I have is and engine cherry picker and it don't go high enough to get it on the truck.  I'll have to put it on a trailer.  Plus my shop is not wide enough to get it out with the buggy in it and it is on jack stands  tore down.   drowning drowning drowning.  Time to call the welder doc for a house call.

Ya might check and do what boost suggests first and while you're at it replace the cup and sealing ring. Also you don't have a draft in the room where you're welding do you? Even a small draft across the weld area will blow away the shielding gas. BTDT,and wondered WTF for a good bit.

I ran into a similar problem the other day and found that the tungsten was the problem.  Best I can tell is that I grabbed a green one by mistake since the paint was gone.  Switched to a known red one and the problem went away.  Guess I've never tried green on steel before. ???  Either that or the tungsten was contaminated and didn't really look it.

I've had no problem with green on steel myself. I agree a contaminated tungsten can cause that.
