Hi guys, I'm chasing a little bit of info regarding TIG welding.

What Filler rod's should i be using for Aluminium, Steel, Stainless?

Also regarding setting's where should i be starting at for the diffrent materials?

Cheers

Hey Phil Mate best thing to do would be go into BOC or something like that and talk to the guys there. Or where you bought the welder from. Also I'd recommend you buy a book cause there is a fair bit involved! You have to use different tungsten, for mild steel you have to use thorated tungsten, which has a red tip, the ones for alloy has a white tip. Also to weld mild steel you have to weld in DC alloy AC.. Also it depends on the thickness of what it is you are welding, for the different size tungsten, also when welding mild steel you have to grind the electrode/ tungsten, in the same direction, not round, length ways!! And it goes on! The settings is it or does it have square wave?
Sorry if it's a bit nonsensical but I have too many things going on at the moment, my Daughter keeps asking questions, so does my wife. ::)

Thanks mate! that's okay.

It has got square wave, The guys at BOC and at the shop are pritty much retarded.

Steel is working fine, Just need practice i think.

Ali isn't as simple, It's just not working? I remember to switch it too AC and change the tip, and filler. ??

Yeah mate change the electrode and use alloy filler rods, change to AC, and make sure you use the right size collets too! Say ya welding 1.6 thick use the smallest diameter tungsten, ya suppose to ball the tungsten but it will ball as you weld, and have about 6mm of the electrode sticking out the cup. You'll probably need the amps set to about 40 or less, when ya strike an arc wait for the alli to go real shinny and near molten, well it should actually be moving a bit not too much of course, then add ya filler rod. And practice practice. Oh also are you switching over the leads?

Thanks reidy!

I haven't switched the leads. So for welding AC i switch the leads from when welding DC?

Yeah with my old one you did, you really should read the book that came with the machine. What brand and model is it?

Yeah mate you can't really go wrong with a UNI TIG mine's a UNI TIG good welder. Yeah with this one you can weld in positive and negative, go figure these inverters.

Well alli for alli ms for ms, we don't, or I should say I haven't seen differing grades for alli I don't know about ss but! I haven't done much stainless work. Also you want to turn ya pulse frequence down and ya pulse duty, arc force just into the white marker on the second one at the back of the dial. Ya Know what I mean? Ifn ya want I can take a pic of where I have my settings to weld a bit of 1.6 alli. Sorry Bud I've probably confused the crap outta ya,so yeah I'll take a pic and post it! here ya go bud hope it helps.

Thanks mate!
Just tryed that and it's worked well!

Why the frequency down? What is the adjustable frequency and pulse duty used for?

Sorry about all the questions!

Thanks man

I think it's to do with how often or how frequent the machine goes from positive to negative controlling the arc flowing from the electrode. And the current can flow from the work piece to the electrode. I don't know much about it all enough to get me into trouble no doubt. I got a foot controller great investment!! It enables you to use it like an accelerator, so you can control the amps while welding instead of having to stop to up the amps. Freaken unreal!!

Post a pic of a bead on some scrap.

Will do tomorrow, Yes the foot controller is great! nice and hot to get it going, then calm it down for the bead.

I'll get some more practice then post a picture! haha thanks mate

You will definitely NEED the foot pedal to do aluminum.
