pulse MIG vs TIG
« on: July 02, 2009, 07:39:30 AM »
There's been a lot of discussion on the pros and cons in the past. Any new stuff out? New opinions? Personally I've never MIGged a thing. Always stick and TIG.

loyalty to the American people."

Compared to? straight MIG? You can minimize heat input TIGging also. A good TIG weld can/will/should have a very small heat affected zone(HAZ) also.

Are you guys talking about a newer MIG with some kind of pulse mode or just using the trigger to pulse it? Pulse works good for me when its not a heavily stressed member, if it is, I think a good continuous bead is stronger....less contamination.

Basically unless there is some new machine with pulse, you pretty much just repeatedly pull the trigger on the gun while burning in on each pull foe a second or so to achieve the rool of dimes look all the off road fab guys seem to like with mig. The problem is, when you do this, if you wait too long in between burns, you get airborne contaminants in the weld puddle and a slightly weaker weld since there is no post flow on most MIG's

Is that true? Mine is quite old (CIG Aussie I think..) but it does post flow and the time is adjustable for this... I was under the impression this was normal.... oops... I think Ive been assuming again....  :-[

The post flow I think Artie is to do with the gas, at least that's what it's for on my TIG..

hi

pulse has been out for 25 years
you can adjust the amps so you have a high amp duration and a base amp duration
great for thin material and vertical up

cheers
