Filler metals for TIG
« on: April 05, 2009, 10:37:40 PM »
I was at Airgas the other day getting my bottles filled and decided I should get some filler that more closely matches the parent metal for mild steel.  I got 5# of 3/32" ER70S-2 and so far am unimpressed.  I am thinking I should have got 1/16" ER70S-6 instead.  I usually use 1/6" 308LSI for everything but aluminum.  For that I use 3/32" 4043.  What do you guys use?

ER70S2  ;D

The 308 is a stainless rod which flows really well. The S6 will not look any better than the S2.

I was butt welding two pieces of 1/8"x12" flat so I could roll it into a burn ring for campfires.  Didn't need to be tigged, but I wanted to try the new filler.  First weld had porosity, but I think that was cuz my stone I prepped the tungsten on had alum embeded in it.  Took care of that, reground the tungsten and tried another sheet.  This time no porosity but I had a dull gray weld with no ripples.  So I flipped everything over and grabbed a rod of the stainless filler....came out perfect, rainbow and all.  Maybe I just need a bigger cup, will have to try that next time.  As for the amps....I don't know,  I leave the the welder set at 150 and use the pedal. :o ;D  I was using thoriated tungsten.  I was going to get some lantanated like had been discussed in the other thread, but Airgas said they would have to order it so I passed.

aIRGAS STOCKS IT HERE BUT IT WILL NOT CHANGE WELD APPEARANCE. I'm betting you had mill scale in the first with porosity.

Mill scale is a possibility.  I prepped it with a grinder like I always do, but I didn't get as picky as usual, cuz it was late and I didn't want to wake the neighbors.  I wasn't trying to say the lanthanated would change the appearance.  Just mentioning I made a shallow attempt at something new. ;D

why do so many of you guys on here use 4043 for alum instead of 5356??
the 5356 is way stronger. I haven't touched 4043 in years. I know for mig the 4043 flows nicer but never tried it for tig cuz I couldn't see the point in using the softer filler
