Explain 6G better please.
"There can be no divided allegiance here.  Any man who says he is an American,
but something else also, isn't an American at all.  We have room for but one
flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is
the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a
loyalty to the American people."

Here, it's fuzzy, but bigger.  Short explanation of 6G is a groove welded out of position on a pipe that is mounted at a 45 degree angle.

Masterfabr,

6G is a reference to a particular welding procedure in an Australian Standard. If you were to have a look at AS 1796 there are 19 (i think) different welding certificates that can be undertaken. If you are not familiar, you would have to look at this standard to see what type of welding the certificate number applies too.

For example:

AS 1796 - 1 : MMAW of plate and pipe over 600 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from both sides).

AS 1796 - 1E: MMAW of plate and pipe over 270 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from one side only).

AS 1796 - 3E: MMAW using hydrogen controlled electrodes in alloy plate and alloy pipe over 270 mm outside diameter (single vee welded from one side only).

and so on and so on........................

Basically, if you get this accreditation you are certified to weld in high quality applications on the material using the techniques and consumables relevant to the certificate you have achieved.

Hope this makes sense.

Here is a little booklet we use. Its a great little book with just about everything you need to know term wise. This is AUS standards though

http://www.thermadyne.com/IM_Uploads/DocLib_1494_Technical%20Trade%20Information%20213-400.pdf

Basicall the term "6G" and others such and "3g" "2F" ect are terms for different welding positions/weld prep and if its plate or pipe.

6G is a double "V" beveled pipe that is setup in a 45 to 30 degree angle. It can't be rotated and must be locked in position. Because most of the stuff you work on are repairs and most things can't be removed.

3G is a vertical up double "V" beveled plate weld. The book explains these very well and has diagrams to show how it is done.

This is what makes it harder for Aussies to get work in America due to our terms and standards are different.

I'd bet he is running a pulser....either that or he has the most steady hands I have ever seen.

I don't use a pulser and I don't manually pulse the pedal either.
