fabbr they claim they are forged but visual inspection kind of looks otherwise. I will get some close up pics this weekend, I gave the pieces to my dad for analysis, he spotted a bad spot in the material he wanted to look at closer. I couldn't say no, he is the M.E. after all.

If they (the parts) were made in China "Forged" may mean copied!
As in forgery where they simply copy a quality part from another part of the world! The shape anyway. Not the metal quality!
Lots gets lost in translation of the languages.... ;)

That is a cast parting line if I ever saw one. The way it split along the length also indicates cast to me anyway.

actually with the diff they just drop for the most part but it did bend one rod. no big deal really with the 6 link I still have 3 holding me up and the aluminum radius rods are only $9.99 a piece.

I'm sensing some doubt about the 2500rpm thing. ;D I love when people call and say they weren't pushing the rail only jumped 2' off the ground! later on the rest of the story comes out! I wasn't in the sand box just the dirt but the rest could be right.

here are a few close ups of the replacement slip yoke that is supposed to be forged but I am going to have to make a call to rockford now.
I cleaned up the first two pics a little better until I get them back this weekend.

Master's right - that really does look cast, not forged. Not just the mould part line, but the coarseness of the grain in the surface finish.

Daimler Chrysler uses the same crap for its connecting rods in the 4.7 and 3.7 engines.
Its a metal substance (the compound varies) thats literally powdred metal just like a fine dust to a fine sand dependiing on the courseness called for. They pour the powder into a mold and compress it with a lot of heat. The powdered metal melts and then takes the shape of the mold so technically its forged as they used pressure.
Not enough heat and the inner metal does not melt bond to each other well and you get a weak part.

Well they're not exactly weak as such but they have zero ductility.LOTS of stuff is done with PM now in automotive and many other applications.

ok I didn't get down to take a few pics today but tomorrow I will, ya I'm taking a lazy day hell I took a lazy week my knees needed it after installing a new wood floor in the kitchen and dining room for the wife. I can now check that one off my list and I should be good for the winter! ya right!
any way I may have been the culprit behind the failure on that yoke. I had a dust cap fall off so I went and bought a freeze plug and popped it in but first drilled a hole in it. I also jb welded it place. after two days of riding around my place I saw the jb weld was flaking off so I pulled the axle and welded the four corners. not huge welds just about 1/8". it really does look like the brake started on one of those spots. it broke at the transaxle on the drivers side. when I clearenced the yoke for more angle in the beginning I went a little too far on one side and saw a small hole so when I spot welded the 4 corners I filled in the hole ( in the middle of the yoke ) and buffed it back. that was before I went to LS to meet up with everyone in the rain and cold. it lasted for that trip and two runs out in the field before it failed and of course I was coming off the ground hitting the terrace's and landing 3/4 throttle never letting off the gas. after a dozen or so runs like this it failed. but there is a spot along the brake on the lip tube itself that looks like a bad spot in what ever process they used to make it. this is what I want to post a pic of. I will get it tomorrow.

You mean sintered metal? Like Oilite bearings? I think that's what you mean, anyway.

You where sliding it sideways. Then you gunned up the terraced hill witch led to a loss of traction over one of the terrace's. You then naturally stayed in the throttle and when the rear wheels came back down. KABOM any you threw dirt and grass at me big time :) :) :) :) LMAO LMAO LMAO ;D ;D ;D

right after I go back to a mini where 6450 doesn't break shit! lol I can't help it , it's too much fun and it doesn't stop making power all the way to the rev limiter!! it can't be all that bad that is why the factory put it there isn't it! LMAO

cvt :m I really don't think that one would hold up! maybe in the sand but not out in the dirt. I wonder if the rpm box would stand up to the 3800 series II v-6? any guess's?
I think I just need to sell this one and go back to the bike or I need to build one of these to get real nasty with out here in the dirt ( pawnee clay ) rather than the sand rails!

I agree thats a cool car Spec likes but I do wonder if it tips over a lot due to torque. Long travel with a solid rear axle can do that.
Need to get a Funco and a Sandrocket to breed. Have a car sorta like that but with IRS rear and airbags to allow it to drop down for passengers. The raise for hauling tail.

tipping over would just be a bonus!! I can see that on the dunes depending on who's driving but I don't see in here on the dirt so much. irs would be nice but the simplicity of it is what appeals to me the most. the funco - sandrocket cross breed would be interesting.

go ahead and split it. I talked to scott today and asked him what he thought of it and he said that LS utah and st anthony's idaho are far far better than corrol pink. he said for the most part it's a 2nd gear dune becuase of all the transitions and witch's eyes and some rocks, lots of trails and shrubs. scott said it was fun but not what he is used too.
I looked today and the drive to st anthony for me will be 14.5 hrs, just a little over a 1k miles. with 2 drivers we could make that run non-stop. leave sat morning spend the week and leave that following sat morning, leaves a day to unwind and survey the damage if any!

I may be out on the heavy lifting for 4 to 8 weeks. Will find out more on that monday. I will have a 1/4' whole in the head buy the end of day Tuesday. But I can provide moral support for ya pulling the donor motor DS. The trailing arms will need much more beef to take a big block.

nope and little bit! we have 3 and 4 foot snow drifts down the drive and my old snow mobile is burried in the stock trailer so that's out for a while to! I'll pull the motor after you return so I can sit and see how it's done!! lol

Melon doing fine. Just hanging hear at dads. Not cleared to drive or do much of anything till after the 18th. So I am staying here and being a bum. Going to go over to summit racing today and do some shopping. I have my personal drive taking me around. Worst part has been my back. I did the crab coming from out under. Naturally some pill sideeffects to work with but pills will be going away and I presume taking thier side effects withthem. Dad Loves the jerky and we were look at the rest of the menu. Got to run I will be on line later.

Me not driving is not safe for my chauffeur! I am not the best passenger in world. If you have to ask me where to go just let me drive. I have quit the narcotics so clearance should come with no prob the 18th.
Buggie driving well I have gotten worse at lifting the right foot with my new rock in the head. A little frok it attitude going on once in a while. On thanksgiving I was giving rides and our drive cuts through the center of the section. So 1/2 mile run on either side. Drive is about 3 ft higher than the fields. My uncle noted I was passing the cars on the highway while crossing the drive. Yes the tire tracks disappear for a little bit ;D ;D around the drive.
I went from stock vw to long travel and will never go back. No video of thanksgiving, they all put the cameras down to see. What a bunch of rookies in my family!
Next mode for the buggy is Heated seats. I allready have the kits.
