Dumb question on seat belt mounting !!
« on: October 02, 2009, 01:18:36 PM »
I'm getting ready to mount the seat belts, but I'm not sure where the shoulder belts are supposed to be !
Common sense tells me that they come out of the supplied hole in the middle of the seat, but the hole is about 7 inches lower than the top of the driver's shoulders.
I thought about mounting them beside the headrest, but they would look kinda "goofy".
I hope the picture makes sense of my poor explanation !!
 :-\Thanks

Unless your a midget the center hole is out for the shoulder belts.

The shoulder belt mounts should be between level and 45* down angle.

Midgets.  ;D

I don't think I ever seen someone put a seat belt through them. None of My seats have a hole there.

If you want your spine compressed in a wreck.........level with top of shoulders and horizontal.

if the shoulder harness goes below your shoulders (down @ 45 deg) when you do a sudden stop the pull of the harness will compress you into the seat. This could crush disks or or bone in your spine.

If the harness goes straight back this will not happen........trust me, after a 153 mph pass and hitting the sand traps at the end of the strip (1/4 mild Drags) you will wish you did put the harness in right. I have two fused vertabra (sp) and every time it gets cold I cant move, but the pain killers are neat........

Yeah, that makes sense to me.
I just spoke to a buddy of mine that runs roundy round cars, and we both came to the conclusion that the seat that I'm using (even though it's brand new), is an old design.
It was probably designed to use the old "Y" belts that are now banned by most if not all racing sanctions. The hole in the back of the seat was to be used for the seat belt to go through, then be fastened to the floor behind the driver.

Mail slot.

Quick and dirty seat belt tutorial...

http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/Harness_install/

The seat that you have pictured is designed for either a 5 way 4 point harness (shown below) or a 4 way 3 point harness (the shoulders mount to the same point). My guess is it also has a hole between the drivers legs for the 5 way 4 point option.

I don't think it is poorly designed. I think you are assuming that the shoulder of the seat is equal to the shoulder of the driver. I think that seat is designed for the top of the head rest to be equal to the top of the driver's helmet, which would put the shoulder hole closer to shoulder height.

If you remain calm while everything around you is complete chaos... then you probably haven't fully understood the situation!
