Car Color/Color Scheme Preferences
« on: August 19, 2009, 07:17:52 PM »
Ok,here's the deal. I was going to ,and may still, use a black pearl for the car color-hence the black gel coat. But since this will ultimatly the wifes she says she wants some other color. We looked at a red metallic pearl today that I loved and she liked but you got any pics of your favorites? Looking for suggestions and such. Also has anyone had any luck with clear chip resistant coatings in the high wear areas with any success?

I was talking with my powder coater today and he did talk to me about how some colors hold up better and the clears that are used with specific colors hold up better as well. When you use pearls and or sparkle, that is applied into the clear. This will weaken the clear coat and take away from the ability to resist chipping. He proceeded to tell me that the hammer tones hold up best to anything. My A-arms are all going to be black hammertone. The chassis color is picked out for myself and I guess youll have to wait and see for that  ;).

Ill get the brand name of the clear he uses over the powder. He told me that some clears are better than others in his expierence. What they were I have no clue! We are talking powder coat right?

Are you asking for color combos?

If it was me - i would do purple orange and white / silver.  That's just me though.......

I like that combination - i don't like flames, but that is how it is always done..... go figure.

Not bad - powder coat in base of metalic orange or purple, then have a guy do air brush work with silver or other color.  then clear and away you go.....

The problem with that is the off gassing of the airbrushed coat.  More often than not you will get tiny bubbles from the solvent based paint coming up thourgh the top coat(in this case clear).  There are a few smaller specialty powder coat shops doing airbrush work with a powder in suspension, rather than the traditional solvent based liquid paint.  There is also the possibility of using high temperature enamel based liquid between powder coats, but my experience with that is limited to single coat powder, then a translucent enamel stain topped with a couple coats of clear.  Even with the high temp enamel, I've seen off gassing ruin paint jobs because the parts sat in the oven too long.

If you go the traditional airbrush method, I would get a guarantee from both the airbrusher and the powder coater, and I'd even get a sample of the color scheme fully cured and tested before putting it on my car.

Black pearl with red pearl is a sweet color combo, just look at the Black Widow.  Just don't let the wife get any ideas. ;D ;D

Naw Jet's got a lot more flake in his then mine.  Look nice Jet.

If I believe I cannot do something it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe that I can, then I acquire the ability to do it , even if I didn't have it at the beginning.
