Roll Bar aspect
« on: August 17, 2009, 04:37:10 AM »
Making a few modifications to my Piranha - cut it in half today to extend the engine bay and spread the top arms a little.

I have just drawn up my new rear hoop and I had a question - is there any reason I couldn't angle the roll bar back approx 5 degrees?

From what I can see from pics most builds have this completely vertical. Just curious if it is critical?

Here it is for those who haven't seen it before I went crazy with the 9" Grinder today:

The plan is to kick the sides out 80mm each side, Rollbar staring from the edge of the bottom frame not in it like now. Extra 100mm in the engine bay to give me room for the exhaust etc. Have learnt a lot since the build started and want to include some of the ideas I have seen here and elsewhere.

I want to put in some cross bracing and a firewall which I can't do without the mod. The idea of the 5 deg is to give me a little more room for my seat. I am 6'4" and need to angle the seat back a little.

I will also move the top bars to the edges like the 'cuda with a roof panel.

I see no reason not to angle the roll bar.

I think we might be missing the question here - just my take -

But if you angle the bar back 5* and the front "A" pillar is already raked they you have the beginnings of a parallelogram.  The vary shape of which does not look stable to me in the event of a rollover where there is a hard hit on the roof.  Seems like a squish waiting to happen.  Sticking with a 90* rear bar (or slightly forward) would make the major component of the cage more of a triangle which could take the abuse a bit better.

Don't worry - the smart ones will chime in soon enough....

The bars behind the main hoop provide triangulation for the main hoop. No worries.

Yup I agree. Because of the rear down tubes you will be fine as there is enough triangulation. Go for it! Might look better too!

Thanks guys

Yummi that was my concern, which is why I only went 5 deg. I was planning on beefing up the rear down tubes a little anyway. It just seemed strange to me that I couldn't find any pics anywhere of anyone with a raked rear tube.

Thanks for your input fellas - means more when some 'been there done that' people chime in!

Well it's almost back to where it was before I chopped it up  :o

I think I can say that so far it has helped it's looks a little - without the side wings where the tanks go it was looking a little skinny I thought, this has helped to beef it out a little.

Will still be putting a brace 90 deg from the front bar down to the upper frame and then continue this down to the lower frame. This will also let me put 2 panels per side which should stop any bowing or pinging.

I feel better with the X brace, will have a firewall too. Fit the seat tonight for a look see and it feels a hell of a lot better now I can angle it back a little.

I will update as it gets better from here! (In the right section of course)

Looking good! Heres a car with a raked bar. You are not alone.

Looks good, but I would probably bring the two overhead bars a little closer together.
I almost looks like your head could fit through there. Might just be the pics. though.
