Snowmobile belt size
« on: May 01, 2009, 08:15:10 PM »
I am putting an old Massey Ferguson snowmobile engine in a jr dragster size sand dragster. It needs a new belt. It is a chinook model. It has a Cuyuna 297 I think. The question is, are snowmobile belts measured from the outside or inside? The old belt measures 42" on the outside by 1 1/8" wide. I know, it is an old engine, but it was free and I already had it. It runs good, snowmobiles in Missouri don't get used much. Tim ???

This may help - The pdf document appears to have complete listings for all gates belts numbers and applications for snowmobiles.  The jpg is a snip from the pdf document.

Bug's  right look to see if the numbers are still on the belt.
Unless the person that built the car set it up to the sled specs...
Otherwise a good source of info is
www.denniskirk.com
They have a really broad selection of belts for all sleds

I have Dennis Kirk snowmobile catalog. I don't know year of snowmobile. It shows 4 different belts for MF snowmobiles. The old belt is a Powerthrust 989900. I think it is the original belt. It says Powerthrust on the clutch and cover. I think it is the shortest belt they show[1 3/16" x 41 3/8"]. Thanks for the suggestions. Tim

Is the engine mounted? If not get a dayco 1 3/16 belt, and set the center to center distance with the belt lash, Put it were it fits in other words...

Check the cross reference page..on the belt size chart...the belt prolly started out as a 1 3/16 but more likely an 1 1/4...by 41 1/2" that was pretty common on the older sleds

The old belt measures 1 1/8", I assume it was a 1 3/16" to begin with. The ? is it measures 42" on the outside, is this a 41 3/8" belt? Tim

I plan on using sled craddle[holds engine and secondary] I'm lazy and this drivetrain won't be in this car too long. Sand draggers always want to go faster. Tim

There is a method to check your actual belt dimensions
Measure the distance between the 2 clutches... if you think the belt was 1 3/16 measure that distance on the secondary...Take that distance at the top of the secondary and the distance of the primary about 3" and figure the circumfrance  divided by 2... times the centerline times 2...should put you in the ballpark

New engine   I wanted to use whole craddle, it won't fit. I will take more pictures of cutting and fitting. Tim
