So I know there is a rumor that ball bearing turbos in the sand are not the best idea. My new motor has a ball bearing turbo. Any precautions for running it. I was thinking about putting a spark arrestor inside the tailpipe of the turbo to help prevent sand from getting inside..........any more ideas or info

WTH are you talking about? The center section is sealed just like a plain bearing turbo.No sand gets near the bearing,ball or plain.Just another case of uneducated people making an issue of something they know nothing about.The turbine and compressor areas "could" get sand in them from a leaking intake system but that's all. The The turbine area "could" get sand in it from burying the exhaust pipe in a dune at speed I guess. LOL!!

Easy Master, im new to turbos in the sand. I would rather ask than regret it and need to go buy another turbo. Isn't that the purpose of using a forum. Most Subaru motors run just a short bend right out of the turbo and it seemed like you could get sand it there even in just a sand storm. Ive got an inch of sand sitting in the tip of my exhaust in a sandstorm before.

Certainly you could get sand in there but that is the turbine section.There's no ball/plain bearings in there. Sand would be quite bad if it got in there tho. Don't worry about the bearings .Just be glad you have a quicker spool time with the balls. (the exhaust will blow the sand out of there anyway)

I think that the spark arrestor would be a good idea. Anything to get a little barrier between sensitve parts and sand.... Those cut short turbo outlets are easy, but they scare me.

mine is straight pipe and suprisingly quiet with out a muffler.

Really, I don't like noise just like you - wait, it seems to be getting worse with age - so yea, you like quiet more cause you are old, but I digress.
I have no need for a muffler and again, I like quiet. Not like AARP old quiet, but yea, quiet.

Thats what the guys with drag pipes and no mufflers always said........ It all depends where your sitting!

Turbo's really do take a lot of noise out. If I'm not mistaken, the SRT4 Neon's didn't even run a muffler from the factory, just a cat, and they are quite enough for production.

I'll agree that turbo's do quiet things down. I had a header, no cat, and then a straight through "fart can" as you old timers call 'em on my civic. I had to go real easy on the gas to keep it tolerable and when I stepped on it, it got loud in a hurry, even in the driver's seat with the windows up. When I went turbo, noise levels dropped quite a bit. Not down to factory levels, but close enough that the only thing that made people turn and look was the sound of the BOV and tires squealing.
I think you are mistaken on the Neon cuz I believe you have to have some type of muffling device to be street legal and the turbo and cat don't qualify.

I think that they got by with it because it stayed beneath the noise level requirements, and I have an old Hot Rod mag that they previewed the car in when it first came out that says it doesn't have any. A guy who used to live by me had one, and it was loud enough for me to belive it didn't have any, but no louder than my S10, so nothing I could say ;D

+1, a prime example of an 'old wives tale' I suspect these experts do a lot of damage in their own right with their mis-infomation, let alone the 'sand' polishing of the turbine wheel....
Dont get me wrong sand polishing is not a good idea but like Fabr says, the beaing style aint got nuffin to do with it....
