407cc generator engine
« on: October 10, 2011, 06:11:47 PM »
Hello i am new to the site, and new to buggies, i have repaired yerf dogs, thats the extent of my knowledge. i was wondering if a generator motor would be any good for making a buggy? its 15Hp and 407cc, got it for 50 dollars on craigslist, i know it will pull me around i was just wondering what kind of transmission to get and if it was worth the trouble, i was thinking about getting a cvt but didnt know what kind or where to get one, also thinking about stripping down a quad with blown motor for suspension and wheels. any comments would be great.

Well it will probably be for ridding on mountain trails and on sand dunes.

See, i figured the smart ones would kick in - guess not?

Genny engine?  Not really tuned for this application would be my guess.  Constant state and all.   Having said that it sounds as though the price was right.  So, my guess would be mount it to a comet clutch and see what you come up with.  The learning experience will be worth more than what you have into it, and understand going in that it may not be exactly what you want.

Quad bits?  What type of quad?   I see some potential here.

well this junk yard i frequent has one or two quads and two old golf carts, all without motors in them, i was thinking about taking the quad and going cheap, using the same steering and suspension. it is a polaris 350 i think.
i looked at some comet clutches and that what i was thinking about just never heard comet before, thanks. even if it is only good for zipping around town, or the dirt roads by my house, itll be fun to make.

If your going to be riding in the mountains I would not suggest Polaris style cvt engine. Just my 2 cents worth. If the mountain is steep I would go with a Honda atv motor as the motor acts like a brake.

Welcome Orion.

well im not looking to go too fast up hills, so if i gear it moderately low i figure i can still get up to at least 35 mph and still be able to climb hills, right? If i am not satified i will just get a bigger engine and do it right, you guys have given me a lot to think about thanks. =)
