Title: VW091 Ring Gear Bolts
Post by: fabr on November 19, 2011, 04:10:55 PM
What grade should they be? 10.9 or 12.9 and what torque spec? This Dons bus box thing has both on the ring gear.

Sounds like Don just picked up any old bolt laying on the floor.  All should be 12.9 in it.

I can go to the local hardware store and pick you up some. They sell them by the pound. They look almost like chrome and no annoying marks on the head. Probably be a bout $2.00. Be as good as what you have now. rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl

M10x25 12.9 unplated/uncoated are a  rare item. Anybody know a source?

Doc that's not quite correct . A 10.9 is approximately a grade 8.

If you can't get bare ones, go for black oxide and hit 'em with a wire wheel.

You might try some of the heavy equipment dealers. We used to use Cat bolts when we needed strong American bolts.

Actually I was wrong they are 9MMx1.0x30MM . Rare as hens teeth.  Found some ARP that should work nicely made for the ring gear in an 020 VW tranny.

Ahhh, the 9MM bolts. Same as a mid 80's Toyota drive shaft. I have drilled and tapped plenty of those to 3/8-24 due to not being able to find replacement bolts in a hurry.

Hey Master did you get those 9mm bolts found or do you still need them? I've got them if you need them. 8) 8) 8)

I got 1 set of flanged 12.9 from a waterboxer. Very nice pieces. I'm looking for a second set tho of the ones from a waterboxer. Are the correct/stock 091 ones 12.9 and flanged also? If so I'll buy a set from you.
The tranny is going together nicely . They're not hard at all to work on IF a person is willing to buy the special tools/manuals/jigs necessary to do the work. Without them you're just pissing in the wind . Since I'm going to do more than one of these I felt it best for me to dive in and buy the stuff.I also got to see first hand the fooking Donsbusbox gave me.  thumb down thumb down thumb down thumb down

Not bad for 3500 bux huh.  thumb down thumb down DO NOT,I repeat,DO NOT buy anything from Donsbusbox----ever!!!!!

I got to give him credit he is actually stating well sort of stating there is no weddle r&p but he's still betting most won't read all the print! 3900 plus the weddle R&p price now he's making some money on these anchors!!     rofl

See for yourselves the stretched out snap rings Donsbusbox uses over. Good ones are on top of stretched ones showing how bad they were. About 5 bux worth of parts that could wipe out hundreds if they fail .  Couple pics showing POS bolts used on ring gear next to correct ones also. Trouble is that for every one of Donsbusbox  that is disassembled by someone and is found to be a POS workmanship tranny there's a hundred or more out there that people pay top dollar for and get this shit.  I now also know why the nose cone bolts were stripped out . Don had modified the shift  selector bracket and it interfered with proper bolt alignment of the nosecone. Instead of correcting it he just ran the bolts in at an angle. thumb down thumb down thumb down thumb down thumb down to Donsbusbox-AGAIN!!!!!!

On a lighter note here it is all reassembled and a pic showing the scale weight of the complete unit. 100 pounds. Only 20  7 pounds more than a Jeffco.

lighter than I thought, nice!

I just looked @ jeffco's site. A jeffco weighs 93 pounds ,not 80 as I thought. So my unit is only 7 pounds heavier.

Nope, missed t-day at LS. Car should be back together by end of weekend and ready to do some road time before Glamis. All SHOULD be fine though as all I did was go through the 091. Glad I did. That thing was just waiting to die.
