Got this weird Welder
« on: September 17, 2018, 11:29:21 AM »
So... I got this weird welder for free.  It seems to work good.  Had been sitting unused for who knows how many years evident by the 3inches of dust built up on it and inside.  I cleaned the thing out. Put some wire in it. Hooked up the tank which was full and its 100% argon which ive always believed to not be good for steel welding?

Also the power cord is tiny, compared to every other welder ive used.  Should I upgrade the power cord?  Anyways I cant find any info online about this thing.

The cord size doesn't have to be larger. If I see the spec plate right it only draws 20 amps @ 30 % duty cycle and 10 amps at 100%. Kind of hard to believe but that's what I think it says.

100% duty cycle at 90amps with a draw of 10amps
30% duty cycle at 160amps with a draw of 20amps.

i guess to my non trained brain, id think outputting a higher amperage would also consume more amps?  idfk lol

I think it came from a construction crew, the tank cap had a big loop welded to it like youd see when the road crews hoist their shit up on the crane overnight.

make sure you have a 12g extension cord and a real 20 amp outlet thats on a real 20 amp breaker cause you'll prob be welding in the 160 amp setting. as old as it is i doubt it will produce like it once did.

we wired the new outlet for 220 with a double pole 40amp breaker in (double 40's) and ran that to a matching outlet as the plug.  The setup came with an extension cord slightly thicker than the cord for the welder.  So I should be good on that.

What about welding steel with 100% argon?

Use the argon you have then decide if you want to go different.Argon is best for SS,4130 and aluminum but fine ,generally, for steel.
