I have heard that a header wrap can cause your header to crack over time, too hot I guess. Mine shouldn't see any moisture so corrosion shouldn't be an issue. Does anyone wrap their headers, and if so, what has been your experience? My headers have already cracked 3 times so I'm probably due for a new set anyways.

i wrap all of my headers and down pipes to retain the heat so they cool slower to keep them from cracking. also to keep the keat off of other things. if yours has cracked 3 times then it's too thin, getting to hot for the wall thickness or if it's cracking on the welds then it wasn't welded correctly. enemy knows what that looks like all to well ;D

And header wrap is awesome for locating those cracks as well.

Only downside I know of is corrosion with mild steel headers not ceramic coated.

The crack is where the tape is, both sides. I have it all bugger welded up now and added the gusset underneath. Seems like a common subi issue, I think fast almost lost his whole turbo one day from the header cracking. I want the heat wrap as I keep melting the timing cover, letting in sand and ruining the belt and pulleys. That costs a lot more than a header does. Now after welding the header and adding the gusset, of course it shrank and is a PITA to install now, need a damn crowbar.

Good info, thanks. I'll add the wrap and a turbo blanket for now. If the header takes a dump, then a new one and maybe a mechanical heat shield.

put a magnet on it ;) 304 ss has a tiny bit of carbon so it will have a tiny magnetic pull. good ss will not at all but nothing wrong with 304!

WHen you get the header on the engine,take a torch and heat each side for 2-3 inches and around the gusset red hot to relax the stress in the tube or it will just crack again for sure.

looks like John made A change to his header in that area budlight. See the added gusset installed below the wie. By the way Budlight this Header is for sale. I ran it for one summer on my old 2.0 subie Motor Befor going to the 2.5.

so i guess i never paid attention to the manifolds used on the suby. that his huge! prob longer than the up pipes on a 7.3 ford diesel lol budlight i would most def wrap that infact buy a spray can of 2000* paint ( yes i know its as good as advertised) double wrap that manifold then paint it with that black 2000* paint. that will keep the wrap from fraying on you and the double wrap will help send more heat ( aka drive pressure) to that turbo for better response!
