Dumb question- How do you know what thread a 3/8" course thread bolt is? I need a tap. Is there a tap chart you can buy or a tap drill chart also?

I'm sure there are some other ones as well. http://newmantools.com/tapdrill.htm they also have some other stuff on there that was interesting to me. right now was the first time i ever looked at their page on a computer. Just to add a few more companies to your arsenal Rutland tool has that kind of stuff https://www.shoprutlandtool.com/catalog/ as well as McMasterCarrhttp://www.mcmaster.com/ they even have charts ;)http://www.mcmaster.com/#tap-charts/=6fkhtn might have to scroll down a bit to see them.

oh yeah to know if it's course. a 3/8 NC bolt has 16 threads per inch, typically written 3/8-16 so if you have a 3/8" x1 inch bolt it should have 16 threads on it. A fine thread will have 24

Till you get a feel for it (at least the common ones) go to your local store where they sell tools of decent quality and ask for a thread pitch guage set.

Your mission isn't to dive feet first into hell, but to make sure its crowded when you get there.

If you have the money, I would go find a local Mac tool dealer and buy  their tap and die sets. They have a lifetime warranty, no matter want you do to them. 8) 8) 8)

Snap-on's warranty can suck also depending on the local rep.

I need a 3/8-nc. But I'm also looking for a complete tap set. I have a metric set that I got when I worked at Bosch.
