well we have the 300cc atv disassembled, I am now looking for a frame or plans to put this stuff in.
any suggestions on frame types?
-
Single, or 2 seater?
woods or sand?
questions...questions???
-
I kinda like this one on ebay motors. Item #140271306593
I know it doesn't have dual a-arms but looks pretty good otherwise.

Is that the Bandit plans?
If it is I know the guy who sells those plans from another site...
I wouldn't go near that with a 10 foot pole...
Altho it's a simple design prolly would be easy to build...you would have to re-engineer many things if you wanted it to last...or handle worth a shit
But that's just me... ;D
-
I will be doing mainly trail riding, hare scramble races, just alot of wood type riding.
I looked at those plans, the donor atv has a seperate forward and reverse gear box, and I would like to use irs rear suspention.
A single seater would get exciting thru the woods with that engine
-
Spec, what would you do to improve that buggy?
-
I'd start off by having dual A-rms, not singles in the front, and rear...I'm not a fan of IRS so I'd prolly swing arm it, altho- I do have spme trailing arms on my last 750 So I could go indy out back...
Front and rear shock mounts are not re-inforced...much jumping or hard driving will fatigue the tubes that they are attached to, there will be a failure there...
The front hubs are northern hyd. trailer, with the snout ...they are durable but heavy as hell...Plus the spindle itself is not the best design for optimum steering geometry, I have found in the woods that keeping most of the spindle as close to the center of the contact patch of the tire to be extremely helpful in keeping the steering light an predictable, That design...the tire rolls around an axis instead of just turning...
Moving to the rear, I have said before I'm a swing arm guy...Alittle tube rerouting, would ease the motor and cassett installation, The way it sits in the photo here you would certainly have some serious plunge in your axles...ANY IRS GUYS CAN JUMP IN AND CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG!!!!
I'd prolly add some triangulation bars in the middle of the cage for structural integrity too
But then again these are my idea of good woods cars
-
since I have the swing arm and shock I thought about useing it. I have seen that set up used on a buggy called side winder
-
I like the idea of swingarm rear. The front though is horrible with single a arm.Horrible camber changes and such. That's a strut front suspension and is fine for very limited travel but IMO not good when wishing for several inches of travel.

I would buy the edge piranha plans myself, If you don't care about huge travel numbers etc, there has been cars that handled well with single a arms...
-
-
I bow to you guys wisdom but I still hate the idea of single a arms. ;D ;D
-
Its not as bad as you think. I bought Doug Heims Piranha and I do alot of trail riding in the northern Wisconsin trails.
-
;) he still hates them. ;D ;D Honestly I think they likely perform plenty well but I think you'd agree that if best is what you're after then a well designed doulbe a arm will outperform a single a arm setup.
-
If the best was what we were all after, wed all have 150,000 cars with v8s etc...
-
I don't want 150,000 cars.Just ONE that is best is fine with me. ;D ;D
-
I don't know WHATS BEST for everybody...
I don't even know whats best for me anymore...This got a little off topic,
I was just pointing out That I know the guy who sells those plans...And the fact that they have some flaws...Most people tend to modify plans to fit their needs anyway...All of my buggies came out of my head...sometimes drawn on a napkin with lipstick...I built some failures that looked good on paper, but didn't hold up when getting pounded in the woods...THERE IS NOTHING WORSE THAN THAT LONG WALK OUT OF THE WOODS, BECAUSE YOU BUILT A PEICE OF SHIT...
-
I have looked at those to. I might try and use the atv a-arms since I have them with the brakes. what ya think
-
If you didn't want to buy plans, I'm sure there are some members here who would be more than happy to help you out in designing a cage/suspension combo
-
I built one of the Bandit buggys. It's alot of fun for a small investment.
-
That's great Pmac!!
How about a write up on it?
We all would like to see some vids too.
-
pmac,
how much time you got on that buggy?
How do you keep it from rusting out on the trail...I see that it isn't painted yet... That sounded like I was calling you out...I wasn't...But I would be interested in hearing /seeing a build log on it and see it after some serious ride time, how about it theo?
-
Well SPEC The kids and i have killed all the grass in the yard and wore in some good trails. I have not painted it yet have not had the time. However i'm in the process of switching the engine over to Honda clone engine the wife and kids don't like shifting gears (go figure).I built this buggy last winter didn't take very many pictures during the process.I have less than $1000 in thie project which i am turning over to the kids and starting work on the double a-arm version of the Bandit buggy.I will post pictures when i get time. I don,t understand your last statement refering to Theo?
-
what type of honda clone? is it a cn250 or a cfmoto
-
Niether. 13hp from Harbour Frieght. $299.00
-
that will work. A member on buggynews replaced his gy6 150 with a vtwin honda and used a polaris gear box. worked well
-
bige, You are off to a good start with the ATV parts. I am looking forward to following your build.
-
thanks, I just have to make some time to decide on a frame and get to work on it. when it starts to get cold maybe I can get something done.
I have way to much r&d on the cn250 engines going on right now.
-
Pmac, great build for 1000.00... ;D I could recommend a few more bars etc in the sides, besides that it looks cool as hell, My kids would love it... Were are these plans located at?
-
I purchased my plans on ebay. Just type in gokart plans. I think for about $20 they can be shipped to your door. I have purchased plans for several buggy designs some good some not so good. I believe the Bandit plans to be some of the most comprehesive ,certainly for the price. I like to get ideas from other plan sets. After all it is your buggy you can do what ever you wish. For the record i did not design this buggy. The designer lives in Canada. He is a nice guy he will help with any difficulties which may arise. I have to say some the fab work here on this site blows my mind. It us truly amazing.
-
;) he still hates them. ;D ;D Honestly I think they likely perform plenty well but I think you'd agree that if best is what you're after then a well designed doulbe a arm will outperform a single a arm setup.
You can use russels upgrade to the piranha the double aarm. or not
