air filtration systems
« on: December 19, 2018, 12:17:07 PM »
been looking at decent to great air filtration systems. getting ready to install an expensive turbo on my rail so  felt this was necessary. need one that flows atleast 1000 cfm ( 1200 cfm preferably)  to be safe and still filters 4 times better than a cone filter.

was looking at k&n until i saw there website said 350 cfm flow and there tech told me 1250 cfm so there out!   https://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?prod=54-6853

discussed this on with the donaldson tech yesterday. they state this filter flows 1285 cfm continous..... https://shop.donaldson.com/store/en-us/product/D140110/prod340458

then i saw this one on karteks site but cannot get the tech to call back for info.......https://www.kartek.com/parts/outerwears-water-repellent-ump-4-intake-pre-filter-cover-fits-ump10900-and-ump10905.html

thanks, i will do that fabr.

so heard back from ump, told them the bw turbo calc says basically 700 cfm (uncorrected) at 30 psi.  i did talk to the tech on the phone and he emailed me a spec sheet and this is what he said.....

Hi,
Nice chatting with you today.  I did a little quick math on your engine using a basic formula that’s easily found which is:  (cu.in. X RPM)/ 3456 = CFM.
That gives you the max flow at 100% efficiency which you never see on a non turbo engine.  Your motor would flow 265CFM at 6500 and 100 % efficiency.  At 30 pounds of boost, that is about 2 times atmospheric pressure so you have 200% efficiency which is 265 X 2 = 530CFM.  That’s it, your chart from the turbo guys can’t change the laws of physics, that is all the engine will pump.  So… our 10905L is plenty capable of that and will give you long filter life.  I have attached a drawing of it and it lists for $319.00 and we can help with rubber elbows and straight aluminum tubing if you need it.  Any more questions, let me know.

matchbot turbo calculator

Actual Flow Rate (Not Corrected)   cfm =   ( there turbo, 30 psi boost at 6500 rpm based on my engine specs on e85)   739.84 cfm

Did any/either of the filter people specify at what pressure drop their cfm ratings are based on? More important ly did any offer a cfm vs pressure drop chart????  Without that info the cfm ratings mean absolutely nothing. Then you need to know what the pressure drop is at the turbo inlet at max cfm output at whatever psi you are running it at. Then you can match a filter to it at the same pressure drop.

no they did not. the ump guy only stated that if need to reduce down from 4" on the can then to do that at the comp housing itself to reduce drop.

That's the problem with suppliers. They only tell part of the story . They might as well say nothing.
