Title: Is there a small rack & pinion on the market that is not a piece of crap??
Post by: hemi43 on October 12, 2010, 04:35:35 PM
I've got about 600 miles on my buggy, and the rack is totally worn out !! thumb down
I bought this rack  http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C26%2D425%2D140  from CIP1 because it was small enough to fit my application.
I don't want to modify the buggy, so I'm looking for something "almost" the same size.
If I can't find one, I'll have to machine one from scratch, but that's a real pain.

Here's a video I took over the weekend !!
Thanks, Dan

Dan,
Did you take it apart yet?  I have the same one and thought it was toast till I took it apart and it was just a sleeve on the pinion that had worked it way out of place.  Don't know if that's what's wrong with yours but it was an easy fix on mine.

Yeah, it's all apart.
The pinion shaft, as well as the bushing are both worn. The pinion should be 16mm (.629) diameter, and it's worn down to .610 !!
The inside bushing is shot also.
The rack itself is salvageable, but the bushings will have to be replaced.
I will fix everything so I can ride a bit more before winter, but would like to find a permanent solution by Springtime.
I would like something with hardened shafts and needle bearings.

Message Doug Heim. He took the Edge Products rack and improved it.

Fastcorvairs makes a rack issue solver called the Tack Snuggy. PM him and your troubles are almost a thing of the past. It fits all standard end or centerload racks.

I think Doug has the answer for your problems.  He builds one that will fit and stand up to the beating.

Get 'em too narrow and they can be sloppy tho.

I supply modified Escort Racks for around $200, I also sell the New improved "edge racks" for $400.

Pricy? yes! BUT I do stand behind it and will warranty the unit with full replacment if it develops issues. Both have gear mesh adjustment and different mounts than you have there.

PM me for any more details

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought all automotive racks had the pinion shaft mounted at an angle to the rack.
Because of the design of my buggies, I need the pinion perpendicular to the rack, because I don't want to modify the mounting point.
I have already begun to re-machine the one that I have, but there not much material to work with. It will get me to the end of riding season though.

The escort rack is a slight angle anf the hyundi rack is straight. I always run 2 unis on the steering column anyway. That will allow you to reposition the input to the rack.

How wide are your racks ?
I'm not running the same size buggy as most guys. My buggys are only 52" wide, and therefore I'm very limited as to how wide I can go as far as racks

well start with the distance between your pivot points of your bottom a-arms..  left to right.  you dont want a rack that the pivots are wider than that.. prefferably a hair less..

master---

yea i just shortened the hell out of my already shortened rack, and i hope it doesnt get sloppy..lol
