Title: CNC BS
Post by: fabr on April 11, 2012, 07:52:18 PM
Even though I'm getting pretty familiar with G/M codes and the BS intricasies of editing the CAM post generator to actually perform correctly(I recently needed to do a 4th axis thing to complicate my life  thumb down)there are times I wonder what the Hell is wrong with me having this drive to learn /do all I can myself. Sheesh!,It'd be cheaper/simpler/fewer headaches to just spend the big bucks and have this shit done FOR me ,not BY me.  eyes eyes rofl rofl rofl Oh well,I couldn't look myself in the mirror that way.  ;) ;) In case you haven'y guessed by now,YES,I have had a bit of a PITA experience recently.  drowning drowning All's well now tho.

Are you building something special?  Or just trying to make it cut something you found in your head?  ;D

Nothing special. I MAY be allowed to post a pic or 2 later. Depends on owner.

Don't worry, not buggy related. Special job.

So you have a fourth axis?  I think I have used mine once in 15 years.  I am allergic to manual coding and my CAM doesn't go there.  ;D

Machine came with a huge 18" MM/Buck 4th axis table. Also have a Fadal 6" 4th. Figured I'd take advantage of the big one for an oil field company. I'm also allergic to coding but I've been forced to learn more than I care to know of it to get the Alibre CAM edited to post decent coding. My hat is off to those that did all this manually in the past.

I had more trouble drawing what I wanted and getting a generated tool path. The interior contour of the intakes I make for the Odyssey and Pilot has 208 lines of G-code. I wrote a spreadsheet to generate the moves based on mathematical formulas to blend from a circle to a rounded corner rectangle while curving from one plane to another. Everything is cut from the backside so the circle is cut using 3 axis simultaneous movement. So is each transition step in between with a decreasing change in Z from short side to long side for each step.

Cool. Why not have them investment cast?Be easy to now make patterns.

I would still have to do machining on them after the casting. I don't think it would save me enough run time to justify the cost. The material cost is minimal so there would be little savings there. There are some things I would like to get cast though.

A good investment casting is a nearly perfect part, even the mating flanges . Billet stuff has a lot of "cool" to it tho! ;D 8)
