R16 rorty can be done with ecotec size engine pretty easily. Look can be pretty easily modified without messing up suspension mounting points and such.

So has anyone made this R16 with a car engine? Wondering if a jetta diesel would make enough power in this rig?

Whats a Jetta Diesel engine weigh?? I know the vw gas stuff aint bad but I am betting the diesels a bit on the chunky side.

Not sure if it would be worth the weight and hassle but if you really wanna know might look into "Gale Banks" as hes one of the best with hotrod diesels.

I know they are a very popular conversion for the Suzuki Samurai's.  I wouldn't run one for high speed stuff though, they make plenty torque, but are kinda lacking in the horsepower and rpm area's.

The 2.0 TDI diesel in my girlfriends Golf (basically the same car as the Jetta from the B-pillar forwards) puts out 170 horsepower and 258 ft/lbs of torque... Revs to 4500 RPM.
