Aux fuel tank
« on: April 16, 2014, 03:26:34 PM »
So I picked an aux fuel tank to drop in truck. Extra 60 gal will get me to LS w/o a fuel stop  LMAO. But anyone using one, how did you plumb in. See many using gravity to flow into vent tube and say wont overflow factory tank because of fuel cap?  Also seeing a solenoid valve being used once powered opens to dump in.  What say ya??

The gravity feed one is the only way to go. Never a problem and will not fail. Just do not forget to put the cap on correctly every time. I have 3 trucks with them. One is over 12 years old now. Eff thise solenoids or switch over valves. PITA.

Thanks Fabr!!  Everything online I found said gravity was best way.  Easy nothing to fail, except fuel cap maybe, and wouldn't leak.  Then a couple were using the electric valves but complained that after 30-45 min they got pretty hot and some would fail.

RDS was brand tank I bought.  Its the tank toolbox combo.  Looks brand new even though its several yrs old.  Little old lady had in here truck that they pulled a camper with, but only on Sundays I guess.

Ifin I had one of them I would have to also buy a pilot relief tube.   LMAO  Need to get out and stretch the old legs every two hours or so any way.   So mite as well stop at a fuel stop.

If I believe I cannot do something it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe that I can, then I acquire the ability to do it , even if I didn't have it at the beginning.

I put one in my truck this last winter with the gravity feed. Works very well. What I like about it is I use fry's and get the points off on gas and fuel. I was able to get 35 gallon at .60 cents off in Yuma which was $.3.12 per gallon. I am going back in May to get my truck to go to Idaho and will top off with another 35 gallon and that will fill me up and get me some where in Utah before I need fuel again.  I am estimating around 1140 miles on the 2 tanks.

So the older Fords use a 2" fuel neck line, so I had to buy a Chevy kit.  nono  They also use the bastard vent tube inside the fill tube.  So after a drive to Northern tool and inspecting the kit looks like the inside tube will fit thru the kit.  The ball check valve, that keep from overflowing tank, is up inside the T part so hopefully all is clear.  Will know tonight.....................

and I know  :wwp: ;D

I would so love an aux tank. Last trip fuel stops were killer. So was sitting, walking, standing, moving of any kind. I cant recall but it may have hurt a little to breath.

Thing I like with a diesel is the freedom to stop wherever I want and not when the fuel tank dictates. Heaven forbid miscalculating where another diesel stop is at. BTDT. Eff that. With over 800 miles range I never have to worry where that next fuel stop is.

Got the filler part hooked up.  Not much rubber fill hose to hook into and part of it was a 75* turn.  People really need to wash the underside of the vehicle  rofl, think you could get extra milage.  Cant believe that wasn't on O's list right after putting air in tires.  wrong forum  Haven't hooked to tank yet cause I'm thinking I may raise it about 2-3" so lid clears bed rails when opening.  Total capacity is 96 gal.  I ran out of gas as I rolled into Enid OK once 100yds from station, pulled some from rail.  Since then I carry a can with fuel in it.  I now have a larger can.  Just truck I should get 1600-1700 miles between fillups  rofl, but about 1000 pulling trailer.  Now to work on used water disposal tube/funnel setup for nonstop driving!!  LMAO
