Title: Combo Spindles
Post by: CrazyFastFab on April 27, 2012, 08:52:50 PM
Another question I couldn't find an answer to.  Are combo spindles interchangeable with a certain year make and model of car?  I am hoping to find a front brake set up economically.  Thanks

I dont think you'll find from a car.  I've seen a few for sale starting at $600, hubs bearing, brakes, and calipers.  Check glamis dunes.com, seen a few for sale on there used.  I made offer, guess it wasn't enough.

I think what you are asking is! Can you use and automotive type of hub with combo spindles. Right? If that is what you are asking the answer is NO.  A combo spindle is set up to use a sealed ball bearing where as a normal automotive hub is set up to use a tapered bearing with a race pressed into the hub.

I'm running timken tapered with combo spindles.  Spindle mount wheels.  I'm thinking the "combo" came from a combo of crap.  Inner bearing from one, outter race from something else.  But I did tons of searching and had no luck on some off the shelf stuff.

Ya, I was trying to find a set of brakes that didn't come from the Sand Rail shop.  Seems like we pay a premium at the Sand Rail shops.

Yep.

Speed costs money, how fast you want to spend. 8) 8) 8)

Does anyone know where one can get front brake kit/hubs that can fit on the combo spindle and have a 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern?  Thanks

So with combo spindles and front brakes there is no choice but to run 5x205mm bolt pattern?  I keep hoping I can find something.  The price of the rims is what kills me.

Have you considered an adapter / spacer? Dont know if they make em, but might be an answer?

Ya, that might be possible but I was thinking that would make the front even wider.

I haven't really looked into it but can't the 5 on 205 be redrilled to 5 on 4.5?

I was hoping that might be an option as well.  Can someone measure their hubs?

you would need the same center hole as the vw 5 bolt because of how most machine them but ya the jamar could but it would require some machine work on the hub.  what is the price diff on the rims your looking at?

Rim for rim the bolt pattern is usually the same money new.  Have found way more offroad wheels in 5x205.  But I picked up stole 3 alum ones in 5x4.5 to run dirt tires.

Good news is they make a 205 hub to 4.5 rim adapter.  Bad news is it will bend, esp if run backwards to put 205 rims on the intrepid hubs. ;)

I have a brake/hub setup that has both 5 on 4.5 and 5 on 4.75 patterns in it. The calipers are Wilwood 4 pot.

Basically I am trying to buy a front brake and rear brakes setup with 8 rims and tires (street and sand).  I am not set on anyone part yet just hoping to find the best option.  I can't seem to find 5x205 rims very economically.  There seems to be tons of 5x4.5 around.
