Anybody and I mean anybody...what do we want done next? I have a suspension posting half done. Brakes and steering system after that.. but then what? Input input input required....

Anybody really good at simplifying electrical? Wanna put yer hand up?

Ok, since you understand the theory of an air shock now, How about a little artie tech article on how they work... For those more challenged about how they work...

The next 'installment'.... Suspension systems ....

Suspension Styles

Suspension systems as used in off road buggys can have several differing styles. But basically they are categorised in 2 areas. Independent and Non-idependent. Examples are pictured below. Put simply an idependent suspension can have an action placed on one wheel which will not having any RE-action transferred to another wheel. With a non idependent suspension an action occurring on one wheel ALSO has a an action on the linked wheel.

As a general rule, MOST buggys have independent suspension at all corners, while Truggies usually have a Live Beam rear axle which is an example of non -independent suspension and independent front suspension.

Examples........

Independant

Non Independent

Now both these sytems have a set of sub systems or categories and these include...(please note I have only mentioned those which are commonly used in our sport. There are a few others for road use)...

Independant

Double A arm like the front and rear of some buggys

Trailing arm and semi trailing arms like the rear of some buggys

Front beams like earlier buggys commonly used

Non-Idendepenent (which can be)

       Dead Beam Axle
Is a simple bar across the width of the car that the wheels mount to and does NOT transmit power. Some front wheel drive cars use this at the rear end. Eg: Like a trailer axle

       Live Beam Axle
This is a typical drive axle (which includes the differential in the housing making it 'drive' the car) like in the rear of any rear wheel drive, non independent car. This is the style used in Truggies (mainly)

Artie,I want to thank you for your efforts in this thread. It is very good useful info. If you don't care could we split the the front suspension stuff from the rear suspension stuff and make them both a sticky ?

Might not need to be split now that I reread it ,what do you think? You know where you are heading with this. We'll sticky the info either way.

I think it should stay to gether. As far as the seperate titles go, perhaps one thread for the angles, one for suspension styles and then say brakes.

Brakes is next then thinking shock absorbers (basic) coilovers/airshocks (and why they are different from emulsion shocks etc AND why they arent actually airshocks).

Followed by the various steering units we commonly use and I was thinking that a really articulate Kansan might do a small write up on Electric servo assisted steering....  ::)

There have been several good articles on the web which detail how to service the Fox airs. Be nice if we had our own plus also perhaps Kings units as well. Looking into that...... what do the others think? Any suggestions?

From my viewpoint I can only really give you susp steer n brakes with any hope of accuracy. I know all the theory on the other stuff but have no real practical application so loooking for volunteers. Keep in mind that this is being written for guys and gals new to the sport so I think a section on basic electrical would be good plus one on simple constructiuon techniques for our chassis styles would also be beneficial....

I want THIS site to be the preferred reference (and activity) site and therefore stand apart from ALL others.....
