7 months of hard riding and i never had an isue with the idler sprocket. i dont have the capacity to make a nice adjustable rear end...

no, but i will be running the same motor as protodie did in his race buggies, and i never read of catostrophic failure with his idler.....  send me some parts and ill sure fab up a nice adjustable rear end unit :D

just havnt found the right design to suit my parts... lol.. ill find the right combo eventually.. i dont mind redoing things if its for the better... now that i have been able to drive it.. i dont mind improving it.. but my time is free and other peoples parts are not.. :)  your not a bother, just want you to know i cant afford anyones parts.

WHY do you want to mountr the engine first?

That's what I thought.   

I've had good luck with mounting the rear axle first as it needs to be square with the rest of the buggy.  Then get the engine close and put a chain on it.  Throw 'er in neutral and spin it.  Adjust motor till chain stays center on the sprockets when spun both directions for at least a few minutes per go.  Then you're all set to make it permanent.

Yes,the rear axle needs to be parallel with a line drawn through the front spindles. Sooooo,to me anyway it's easier to me to make mounting the rear axle first much easier. Just me though.
