Title: 600 Kart
Post by: Dqracer on September 29, 2008, 11:30:12 AM
These are some pics of a build I started last month just for fun. I've had a bunch of parts laying around the shop,  extra stuff left over from our mini sprint racing. So I decided to build a monster go kart, just a toy to play with, and use it for SCCA Solo I(pylon racing), or throw some paddles on it and Sand Drag it, or just burn the back tires off from it in a vacant parking lot and practice Driftin',,, ;D   I'm a big kid,, what can I say..LOL

First I started by building a chassis jig, ( needed one anyway) it bolts together so it can be knocked down for storage. Then useing Bend Tech Pro, (awesome software) I designed the chassis I've had in mind and started bending  DOM 1.250 x .125 wall tube for the main frame and roll cage.
The front axle is similar to a regular kart in design, useing mini sprint spindles , it needed front brakes, I came up with a combo that is a 8.25 dia rotor, a wilwood caliper and a aluminum hub that will allow everything to fit inside a 10' dia Weld beadlock wheel. I'll use a dual master cylinders with a balance beam for adjusting brake bias ,frt -rear. The rear will be a 10' rotor, and another Wilwood caliper on a 4130 1.25 dia live axle. Should stop like a throw'n down a wet sponge. The engine is one of 2 choice's , a 98' F-3 600 Honda w/ Mikuni flatslides, or an 07' Honda 600 RR w/ R6 yamaha carbs. both motors will be on alcohol and make 110-118 hp. The kart should weigh 525-550 lbs with driver..... ;D     here are some pics of the build so far.

Bending the chassis tubes  useing the bend data from BT-Pro is pretty sweet, everything bends up perfect, with little to no wasted material. I luv the program, I made a couple design changes from the original, mostly for looks after I was able to see it start to take shape. The rear axle bearing mounts are double shear, cut out of .125 plate. I changed the cage to be more like a rear engine dragster.
The seat is .090 5052 aluminum, bent up on a homemade radius brake I built years ago to build custom dash panels for race cars.
Right now, I'm working on rack & pinion steering mounts and the pedal assemblies, so the progress has slowed down alittle, its tough, cause I really wanna go for a ride.... ;D

Oh and tell more about the tilt steering!

The kart is just for those times in life when ya feel the need to throughly scare the freakin' crap outta yer self and survive..!

The tilt column is whats takin some time to engineer, it needs to tilt forward from it's 30 degree laid back driving position to a straight up position. The steering wheel is a Quik disconnect, so with or without the tilt column ,a guy can still enter or exit with no problems. I,m just challenging my fab skills with the Tilt feature. So far its working,, I'm pretty challenged and am working on the second design  ;D

Just an FYI there is a Tilt wheel kit avalable that would save you a lot of screwing around. If you want I can track it down.

Ody. yea , i'd be interested in seeing that.  Thanks.

A new Mini Sprint will cost $17,000 with a stock motor, then you can add another $5-$8 grand for a built motor.

once you get a car, the cost of racing it is affordable if you don't tear it up. to do a race costs $80- $120 , entry, fuel, hotdogs.etc

I'm asking $18,000 for both of my cars with a ton of spare stuff.

I think it is the same as what you said yours were. Its definitely been raced. Looks clean...just not new. If memory serves me right it looks like the one in the picture only white.

I'm 6', an weigh 200lb, I fit fine in a micro.  The Mini's are very limited in where you can race, not many of around, the 600 micro's are nationwide.

the blue car looks like an older Bailey chassis.

around here in michigan, they are so few tracks, they race minis and micros together....I likely would end up with a micro myself...

More build pics, finally have the Tilt column done, it works great ..! It offers a lot of room to exit and enter the drivers seat , even without taking the quik disco steering wheel off. I think I'll send it out to get chrome plated just for kicks, the kart is gonna be powdercoated competition  orange, and the chrome would look good.... BLING..!

The welder cart I built, has the tank slide in under the welder,at a 15 deg angle , it keeps a low profile and will fit under the workbench outta the way.

Ahh,
I'm just alittle slow on the uptake sometimes, That is a good space saving idea,
Ya know, this is off topic, but I've been seeing more and more people doing more with less lately.

yep,, where theres a will theres a way, it's just a matter of how creative you are with your hands & mind. I know guys with a shop full of expensive machines, that can't build anything unless they have a detailed blueprint or a software program to go by, I was "blessed" with the ability to visualize what and how something should look like and work , 99% of the stuff I build is from my head. Can't imagine how life would be if I had to pay somebody to build this stuff for me, cause I couldn't.....! Life would suck..LOL
