Has any one tried using flux core wire and shielding gas when welding?
-
No,why would there be a need to?

went to my local welding shop to get prices on steel. There was a guy welding and I asked what was his setup, and why there was hardly any welding spatter? He said he uses flux core wire and shielding gas to get better penetration and there's no welding spatter. News to me.

That is duel shield welding, different wire I think.
Puts down a nice weld.

I used to use it all the time doing on-site structural repair work on heavy equipment. It's a different wire from "flux core" Look up dual shield wire or gas shielded core wire. This is exactly what we used, but there are others.....http://www.ebay.com/itm/E70T-MIG-Welding-Wire-5-64-50lb-coil-Lincoln-Ultracore-70C-Dual-Shield-/191062087968?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c7c301920 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/E70T-MIG-Welding-Wire-5-64-50lb-coil-Lincoln-Ultracore-70C-Dual-Shield-/191062087968?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c7c301920)

So... Why don't more people do it?

more for adverse conditions but you can if you want to but I think it's a little more expensive. a good quality wires really reduces splatter as well all a good welder and the operator etc etc.
