PBS cable shifter
« on: November 12, 2008, 07:22:12 PM »
I had this shifter suggested to me as the best mid engine shifter available for the VW 091 used midengine. wcdfromaz you got any comments on this and would you get me a price?

Hey Fabr
This guy who has the Honda engine/trannyied buggy at Silver Lake has a mid engine shifter setup in his. He made all the linkage to the tranny but for a shifter he used a new corvette shifter as he said they were the best thing he found. Just some food for thought if you are gonna be stirring the gears in the big tranny a lot.

I just took some pics of the back cause thats were all the different stuff was. The shifter up front was right out of a corvette.

Well it LOOKS cool but I'm a little skeptical about all that linkage.

lol All that linkage? I have seen many VW mid engine setups and they aint exactly any less cluttered or parts! But its cool.
Its highly likely you will have your own linkage you buy/build/design.

The suggestion was more of look at the corvettes stick shift. You know it is better quality than most things. Thats what he pointed out was that the corvette stirrer was quality and precision and smooth. Compare it to other mid engine shifts before you buy. Or not. As said it was just food for thought in case you might not be aware it could be used easily.

I have watched him drive this thing all over and speed shift hundreds of times and he has never missed a shift with this. I did not drive it but I did move the shifter and it does click through the gears very smooth.

Its just a idea for a better part at the start of a mid engine shift clustermuck.

I don't have a clue myself but I can really envision a linkage disaster as compared to cables.

I understand that Fabr but mid engine shifters all do the same movements. These movements must of course start smooth and thats the idea for the vette shifter.

How you get that movement to the tranny is your biz. I am not fan of pushing on cables and if you like them great.

Most mid engine shifter issues I have seen are usually not the cables though. Its either cheap parts at the shifter or the parts that bolt to the trannys nose con that mess up or are sloppy.

I understrand the apprehension of the morse type cables but are you familiar with the low backlash ones? I think they would be less sloppy than all the linkage would have.

Yah I looked. I like the nose cone but I would have to see the shifter part work. It is likely high quality but it does look a little off (pretty thin to take a beating) but I would not "really" judge it till I saw it in person.  It might be solid as hell.

I have never really considered these or other shifters for any kind of VW as we got tired of VW stuff a while back (normal rear engine jazz) which is what led me to smaller buggies in the first place.

Thanks,I would appreciate that. What is your suggestion for a "best approach" to the mid engine shifting woes of the 091? I figured a cable setup would be the easiest but am open to suggestions.

I agree the cable is the easiest.  Not a lot of people run the bus up sidedown mostly because it puts the inner c-vs too high up in the car and it's hard to get any droop in the suspension. This isn't a problem in your application but it also puts the starter on the bottom where the sand is.
