October is going to be a time for a shake down for my sand car.  It should be done by then but you all know about the best laid plans.  It will depend on Jerry and Kay and when they leave.  We like to travel in pairs for reasons all of you know.  You never know when something is going to go south.  Drowning

Hey guys,  I'm back from the dead!

I will be there this time! My wife suggested that I take a vacation with the rail. 😁

My truck and trailer are around 31'. Does anyone want to split the cost of a spot?  I'm going to show up on Sunday, the 21st, and I'll head out on Thursday.

i dont know of anyone that will due to size but there not expensive. if you dont need electricity then there are primitive spots i doubt they even charge you for, in cowboy camp ground. do not reserve a primitive spot as they are rarely ever used in that camp ground. elec and water sites are $24 per night i believe. hope you make it down and it will be a real fun time.

plenty of primitive. sites available in cowboy camp. there is a bathroom and showers there too. no need to reserve a site as i have never even seen the primitive sites 1/4 used down there.

Better have your heaters in working order. Anyone looked at the forecast?  3: BRRRRR!!!!!!!  It was a bit warmer the last 4 days though. We had a great time.  Honestly,I'll take pretty damn warm over bbrrrrr any day. Lets try to not do it too early next spring . If the forecast is close to right it will still be chilly as hell this fall.

have not looked at the extended forecast. are we talking upper 40's and low 50's for highs?? thats getting chilly for extended riding.  60's for highs would be perfect! dry and 60's that is lol hell one trip was low 50's and misting rain for 2 or 3 of the days. doug was lucky enough to make that trip! had a fire going day and night for 3 days lol

mid 30's nights. eff that. Upper 50's to very low 60's. Hopefully, that will improve.

the forcast will improve before then and yes approching freezing at night is not good. low 60's for high is good. we may not get a fall this year. this later than we usually like to go and we did have dates for 10pth 11th of oct but glen and jerry couldnt make those dates lol not sure if they will be able to make these new dates. hope they can. no matter what thats nice cool weather for pulling a toyhauler down!

Hell, I don’t believe the weather forecast 5 days from now.  My crystal ball doesn’t work that good.  I hate to hear that enemy and Carl can’t make it.  As long as we don’t have another burn ban, I’ll be ok.  I started the new sheet metal work a few days ago.  Got the roof done, 2 side wings and laying out the main trunk box.

we have spring penciled in, but really want to the st A rush again, and I got Yvette broke in on small stuff.

It will be a lot nicer weather in 2 weeks when I go back for a couple more days when sandracer and his crew show up.  I will say this though, the dunes are massively different than last year. I have never seen such a dramatic change in them in just a year. I've never seen a couple of them as tall/steep. Buttercup is ,for all purposes, gone.

not surprised with all the trafic down there now. some wind and 3 times the toys. i have to agree, imo, buttercup was still decent sized in 03\04 but has steadily shrank. seems like the last 6 or so years all the sand has shifted SE.

Wish I could make this one, but my handlers say I have been absent from the chain gang past the allowable limit for the year as well.
I expect pictures and stories of authentic battle damage! Except Mitch... He got it done last run  ;)

Well the fickle finger of fate strikes again. Had the car almost together last night, had it running but found a water leak and the new S4 would not shift into 3&4.  Will have to tear it all out today and start over.

Ok I gott he trans and engine back out and the trans tore down.  Found out in our haste that we had put the first and second gear dog ring on backwards.  Believe me when I say this S4 PBS is very easy to work on, no settings to worry about but you have to get it all back together like the boys at Weddle planed it.  It's all back together and installed into the car. Here's a look inside of and S4.

(https://s22.postimg.cc/43mn08gj1/thumbnail_65.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/43mn08gj1/)

Here is the problem that I found when I opened it back up.
(https://s22.postimg.cc/3qv8u90vx/thumbnail_77.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/3qv8u90vx/)

Here is the little ditty that makes the shifts all happen in and S4. With each shift the barrel will rotate about 40 degrees and moves the fork and dog ring.
(https://s22.postimg.cc/4ufd5tnzh/thumbnail_83.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/4ufd5tnzh/)

Here is the what makes this trans what it is.  Notios that the gear stack on this trans is not like what's in your average 2D or bus transaxles First gear is at the pinion gear end and then they put second clear down at the opposite end.  This braker's up the load on the pinion bearing. Then third is opposing first and forth is opposing second.
(https://s22.postimg.cc/cn60y29gt/thumbnail_71.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/cn60y29gt/)

All in all this had been a learning experience in trans axle tear down for me.

Well fellas, I just ordered a set of DWT Red lables with Doonz for all four corners.  😎  Too bad I just lost the transmission in my SUV this afternoon... 🙄 I Would've rather put that $2500 - $3500 into a new enclosed trailer.  Oh and a 15 year old boy asked my 16 year old daughter to Home Coming. I'm not sure what other bad news I'm going to run into,  but I've had about enough.

October 21 can't come soon enough. I still have to get a flag, wire my 3rd brake light, change oil & filter, put on my smaller front sprocket, and put on my new chain and a bit of chain lube. Most of which I'm planning on doing this weekend.

I need this vacation... Sand therapy should help my stress levels right?🤔

Now onto the changing out the water pump.  Found the water leak was from the pump. Ya my fault again.  In my haste I wanted to see if the trans would shift and I started the motor without water.  Only ran it for like three or four minutes but that was just long enough to scrub the water pump seal.

I added to my last post down the page about the trans.   kick

Trans was set up for a v8 with a 4:56 ring gear. put a new 5:14 in it. To dam heavy to ship out and have done.

I'm not sure what other bad news I'm going to run into,  but I've had about enough.

so brother asked sis to go to home coming with him??? the trans in the suv is just part of owning vehicles but a vacation in the sand box trumps all!!!

they sell the right colored flags there but needs to be a reddish orange color. flags needs to touch the pole at the gate so apprx 6 to 8' off the top of your roll cage.

Bar at gate is supposedly 10 feet. That's the regulation.

i couldn't remember how tall that bar at the gate was and a red flag used to pass then an orangeish one but really not sure anymore but they haven't turned me a way yet so i must be good with my orange flag  ;D ;D

fast, did you get your powercoated parts back yet? 23 days to go!!

All but my wheel rings.  Trans, Motor are in and running and shifting.   bounce jj: Broke my own record for how many times they were in and out.  Five times in and out before I got it right  beathorse.gif~c200 <a href="http://www.animateit.  Still have a radiator seep but I think the barrs leek is going to take care of it (got a little rough with it taking it out).  Console is in with all the radio crap, sifters, fuel pressure Gage stuffed in.  New temporary seats are in, have to take my Twisted Stitch seats back to AZ for a recover.  Rear trailing arms are on with the hubs and brakes, started putting the front a arms on yesterday.  Back brakes are bled will do front tonight.   Install all the sheet metal and Aline the wheels.  And I think it will be ready. No time for the dyno to tune for E-85 right now so I'll have to settle for the 510 it has on E-50 I need to replace the turbo it is sounding a little scratchy. So I have reservations and will shoot for the 21 to the 25th.

Not sure about you guys, but i'm getting STOKED!!

Next week i'll be doing some car prep.
-New Doug Heim joints in the front end
-New rear suspension bushings
And that's about it.
I've gotta make a list of tools to bring and add a spare tire to my trailer, oohh and grease the bearings.

I will probably bring my welder too....just in case.  Possibly some random nuts and bolts too.  I like to be prepared for anything.

its a shame carl and enemy are missing the trip. sounds like fast will be there.

always excited to go for sure! infact i'll be pulling the toyhauler around next day or two to clean it up and start loading.    you meantioned spare tire......if your pulling a tandem axle you might consider 2 spares considering the distance you are traveling. just a thought is all as i always have 2 spares after seeing people blow 2 on the trailers.

i am not sure of the weather but as long as the highs are above 60 with min wind....... it will be great!

65* ambient is damn nice weather down there.....in the sun or on the sand. now when it's 50 to 55* for a high and cloud cover plus a breeze and misting/ raining off and on for 2 days straight then it gets a little cold  ;) ;)

My buggy just went on a diet... Lost 66.6 pounds of rotating mass. ;D  20.8lbs per rear tire and wheel going to paddles should be a nice little bump in performance vs the ITP Terracross tires I've had on it.

Trailer is just about done.  Gotta grease the bearing buddies and get a couple of new spares, oh and replace the winch. $$$ It's worth it though.

fabr is correct, there are 4 pay showers i believe,  a womens and mens bathroom in a concrete building.  for the most part, decent or better. i have not used them in a number of years as my toyhauler has a full bathroom.  so no matter your sleeping arrangements the bathrooms will be there at cowboy.  the primitive sites are always open btw.

Ok Made my escape from the hospital today about noon and was back in the shop by three.  Got some sheet metal back on and readied and axle for putting the cv's on.  So my son said he would only work a have day at his job Saturday and then help me to put the axles on the car.  After that he is going to load the fifth wheel into the truck bed for me.  So that will pretty much take care of the heavy work. Five or six more pieces of sheet metal to put on the car and it will be ready to load in the hauler. Things to do Saturday are make sure I have water in both ICE CREAM Buckets, All four CV's greased and ready for my son to man handle up into the car. If you don't know already 934 cv's and axles are friging heavy.  I have a hard time just getting them to the car.  1: So I have a shot at getting the car to the dunes for a shake down.

I will be at the dyno shop in the morning first thing to watch Chris (Wichita Dyno)  tune Jerry's car.   Jerry has it all wired with ten foot of wire on each lead just to make sure everything is right.  After it starts and is tuned he will then cut and run all the wires like they should be.  That will be in Yuma where will be this time next week.

Getting there

Got one more piece of sheet metal left to put on, finial bleed on the brakes, change oil and a few zip ties to put on and I'm ready.  Was going to load my straight up e-85 program back in the car but found that some dimwit 5: <a href="http://www.animateit. had put a fuse block to close the the DB9 plug on the back of the ecu  kick.  I'll have to mix up a batch of brew like I have been running to bring down.  Thanks to Budlight for bringing me some 101 moley, I'll get your stuff back asap.  Thanks to my son for manhandling the axles in to car. Now onto the trailer.  see you all in a week. hh:

My to do list is getting shorter... Nothing like running down to the wire for me to make this trip.

Waiting for some new tires for my trailer,  as my old man borrowed my trailer and put new ones on, but they weren't rated for enough weight.  🙄

Got my body panels cut out this last weekend, and my wrap prints tomorrow.  It's going to look sexy.

I'll finish up wiring and mounting up my winch tomorrow night as well as get my long ram jack installed for my tilt feature on my trailer.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Less than a week to go boys!

If my trailer didn't have such a steep incline,  I wouldn't use one either. I've been using a hand winch, and it sucks.  I need to plumb in a hydraulic brake lock on the rail, so that I can just drive up and lock the brakes.  As it currently is, leaving it in gear won't keep it from rolling backwards.

not sure what kind of trailer you have that is so steep that the rail is rolling through the compression. or are you talking about parking on the ramps and then winching it on? got a pic? you have me curious now.

My to do list is getting shorter too.

-Balance trailer tires
-Make spare tire mount
-Grease the bearings
-Pack tools.  I will have my nitrogen tank as well as a gallon of King shock oil.
-Fix my freaking clutch cable!!  I went out this Saturday and the cable snapped at the barrel at the clutch handle end!  beathorse.gif~c200  It's 2 weeks to get one made, so I machined a stainless barrel, TIG welded the cable to the end of the barrel and added a set screw on each end of the barrel to hold that mother-f-er in there.

Heading out EARLY Sunday morning.
I'll be damned if I don't go out when I get there. 8)

sounds like you have a decent to do list too! if its dark when you get there, i would pass on a first timer night ride  ;)     i wont even go out the first night i get there, but thats prob because its usually 1 am or later when i get there :D

so not sure what kind of clutch cable system your running but, when i was building them, i eliminated the cables by mounting hydraulic slave cylinders right to the arm on the clutch case. easy to do then, all hydraulic from there one. just make sure you build a clutch pedal stop so you don't over throw it.

It was a boat trailer that I modified into a tilt bed.  7 x 10.5 top deck, single axle. It's close to a 40° incline. The long ram jack is effortless to operate. It turned out better than I had anticipated.

I'll take a photo tomorrow.

This 750 clutch cable has to last until Nov-1 and the new Busa has a hydraulic unit that I will be doing a foot clutch.  My old car, I did a Willwood MC and built a stop in to keep it from over throwing.

Clutch is fully operational.   :s send it!

The thought has crossed my mind.  I'm tired of it taking my garage stall.  I don't put enough miles on it to justify owning it.

I figured someone would likely have more fun with it than I do.

The dunes are a bit disappointing . They've been too wet and not nearly enough south wind. They are a lot flatter than I've seen them. Faces are not as steep. No razors either.

Car's loaded and ready for go.  I can tell that my first gear is lower then it has been.  Went up the ramp with less effort.  Going to have some adjustment to do, it didn't want to go into neutral very well when I got it in the trailer.  Had to play with the gear shiftier some before I found it. going to leave out after early church.

Well,  I made it home safely, and I came back knowing that I have made some great friends. What an outstanding group of people who all have a love for playing in the sand.

Admittedly my first time to the dunes wasn't what I would call a true success, as I was over geared, over spring, not dampened well, running hot, and puking oil from the clutch cover, but I made it down and back safely, so it wasn't a failure. 😉

I'm already looking forward to the next one, and I'll have plenty of time to get it ready.

Thank you for the memories!

Ok we are back from heaven.   The sand was rough and wet, the rain was cold and and a PITA but we had fun. The camp fires were forced air big.  Hiem was the only one to break (Toque converter plate) we think.  DS tore a CV boot on a fast trail run today, and Budlight had the battery go dead in his car. I think he had that fixed today, and I got high centered on a berm in the trails.  My HRT car did the best that it has ever did since I brought it home.  The new PBS S4 performed beyond all of my expectations. Well worth the time and cost to install it, even the wife like's it..  The only change I'll make is the front shocks need to be a little stiffer on the compression side.  All in all everyone had a super time.  Picture's and video coming later.  Thanks to all good people that helped me load and unload. And to all that cooked for the dinner. We Had fooooooooooooooooooooooood and more fooooooooooooooooooooood.  l we had fifteen people in our toy hauler nick named the Pig to stay dry.

well we to just got home. i got some video but not much. found out that the drive through hutch to get there is still longer but far smoother and flatter! higher speed limits shaved an hr off our drive! note to everyone.....the sign west of hutchenson kansas thats says hwy61north is not hwy61 north! its 50 east! so we went a ways out of our way and the i35 south of mcphearson is horrible lol     great trip as always! grimm, deranged....very nice to meet you 2! deranged gave mike a run with his short wheel based rail. mike was jamming those gears trying to back in the tq band as deranged was popping the rev limiter floating into 90* turns on and off the side hills as i sat in mikes pass seat laughing.  fabr.......well you looked good in that sxs  :D i know you'll have the others ready soon enough. budlight69 was a hoot especially once he hit the budlight!  rofl rofl  i did tear a cv boot or so i thought......turns out my down pipe wound up 4" short and the heat is cooking the cv boot. when we stopped and i noticed that one cv boot was balloned up then shrunk back after sitting for 5 to 10 mins i got the hint lol. did i tell anyone how much i hate playing in cv grease! the smell is worse than the mess. so i am going to change from the desert gold since they changed the blend. budlight is using molly 101 or something.....what are others using?

no vicks up the nose  rofl that burns

have you ever shot your cv's with a temp gun after you stopped?

i will be checking that cv grease out!

i have been running cat gold grease but they changed it and lowered the operating temp with the change.

this is what the formula they have gone to is.......https://caterpillar.scene7.com/is/content/Caterpillar/C10604656

this is what it used to be..........https://www.finning.com/content/dam/finning/en_ca/Documents/Parts/Maintenance-Products/Grease/Cat-Deseert-Gold.pdf

went from 450* to 284* range. the jackson boys used to use the cat gold which is where i heard about it from back when.

You do realize why the Cat Gold grease stinks is because the base stock is cat shit don't you?  :m The Neo stuff has some other shit in it................. ;)  :D Honestly,I believe the issue with many of the greases used is that they are too stiff and do not flow until up to quite high temps and are just wiped off the surfaces creating wear before they start flowing back onto the balls and grooves. By then the damage has begun and is repeated each time the car is used.

agreed and at the same time i have the lower temp new cat gold in. i know in the past with the prev formula that when i checked mine on a 90* ambient day i never saw over 175*. still feels about the same by touch but not the same. i am going to try a diff grease and see but regardless i need to move my down pipe and route out the back!

WOW!  What a freaking blast of a time!  It was way cool to finally meet up with like minded crazy people who just have not grown up and still love to play in the sand!  Wes reminds me of a young Willie Nelson!  HAA!!!

The hospitality of everyone there was second to none!  I'v never had 12 year old cheese before, but leave it up the the guy from Wisconsin to school us on cheese culture.

There was so much awesome food too!!  WOW!  I think i'm STILL stuffed.

When a fellow duner is in need, you help out...even if you have to literally drag them out.  I thin Glen likes to play tow truck.

Glen giving instructions, or maybe a warning of a lot of sand coming his way, and possible whiplash.  LOL

And my total mileage after I got home on Saturday with no issues.  It's pretty cool to build a car from the ground up, thrash it for 2 years with almost zero issues and tow it 2,000 miles on a trailer that was built in my garage.
OOPS, I forgot that Doug's car was Dodge powered for a few miles.  We think it's a cracked flex plate, but knowing Doug, that will be taken care of this winter.

But I tell ya what, this couple below are some very awesome people.  To be duning together since the late 60's, and to go out there and just shred the dunes sounding like kids was awesome to see and hear.  You 2 rock!

GREAT PICS. The one question I have,,  is how bad do you have to break that you need a crane to recover it. lol Looks like all had a great time. hope to see you all in the spring.

Yes, it was a fun trip.  Awesome to see some new faces, deranged just loved the dunes; went out by himself many times.  He had never ridden the bowls or hills sideways, couldn't get enough of it.  The weather was good for the most part, lots of sun and warm days.  Got to see the new fabr compound.  I kept mine with the rubber side down this time.  DS was giving blow jobs to his CV boot  rofl  rofl  :m  grim reaper is doing the contortion act under his buggy, we named it the "Valdez" for the leaking oil.
here are some random pics....

Interesting enough that 10 (so far) people enlarged that pic?? Some are just addicted to crack and can't break the habit I suppose. So much peer pressure DS!

Looks to have been another awesome few days in the dunes! I for sure will be out to play in the Spring, starting to get the shakes from lack of sand..
Or from the new plumber... MMMmmmm.....crack.
