Title: VW 002 bus trans
Post by: fabr on September 28, 2008, 01:13:46 PM
Can a 002 VW bus trans be used in a mid engine application?

I dont think you can use a bus trans mid engine, 002 is a boat anchor anyways...You cant reverse the ring gear in a bus trans...

I thought 002 was the strongest of the VW trannies. But if you can't flip the ring gear it won't work mid engine style. >:( What  ones can the ring gear be flipped?

None of the bus trannys, 091 is the top dog, If i remember right, you can only mid engine a sedan trans, type1, Type 2..

I've heard that with some machining of the cases, you can mid mount the bus. No ideas on what has to be done though.

Have you heard of it done with a 091? I was thinking the 002 was strongest but bug corrected me.

I'd imagine the machining would allow the diff to be flipped?

Don's Bus Box would have the answer.

BUG Trans use the same gearset as the 3 rib and 5 rib BUS trans so they can be built to handle about 200HP however with only a 6" ring gear ( the weak link) the BUS Trans is often preferred because it has a 8" ring gear. The BUG Trans can be used for mid engine applications by flipping the ring gear and the BUS Trans cannot. You can flip the COMPLETE BUS trans upside down for a mid engine configuration BUT that requires some inovative mounting to say the least.

I understand the 6 rib 091 though can be built with Weddle gears to handle 300 HP and 300# ft. torque.

Actually the 1984 and later Vanagon Trans are the strongest. The ring and pinion came in 3 different
ratios: 457, 483 and 486. Besides the R&P the reverse gear is the weakest link in the VW trans. The 84 and later vanagon trans has a much larger reverse gear in it.  I have pulled a full sized buggy up a grade backwards with mine. The only disadvantage with the Vanagon trans is it is a side shift and requires a special linkage kit.

Wouldn't be a disadvantage if it was being used as a secondary trans that would only be shifted rarely . Have I read somewhere that the vanagon trans has a 9.5" R&P? How much motor are you using with it?

The R&P is the same diameter as a standard 091 trans. I dont know what that diameter is off hand.  I installed a Super diff from a standard 091 in mine. As far as the shift linkage goes Davis Racing offers a kit that thruns the side shift into a nose cone shift. I am using a VW 2332 with a T3 Super 60 Turbo with an innercooler and EFI. Aprox 200 - 250 HP

Not to be too nosy but do you have a torque # on that motor?

Id think with the turbo you'd be closer to 275-300, What are the specs, heads, cam carb's etc...

No I dont, however the cam that was selected was ground for low end Torque. I do a lot of tight woods riding and hill climbing so the motor was based on that criteria.

The cb 044 heads in my opinion are a much better choice than the ridiculously priced superflows... I ran them as well on my 1915, with dual 44 webers....
