I never said the guy didn't have talent, I was pointing out that the welds were undercut.  Now maybe he did use filler, but he didn't use enough of it.  With all of your certifications I would hope that you could see that.

My shop might look like an office to the shop you used to work in, but I don't just work in my shop I run it.


I'm not afraid to post some of my not so pretty welding, but this all passed NDT.


It's just a damn shame one of the guys in the shop kicked it across the floor on accident. It's not very clean at this point but I was off the clock last night and I didn't want to wipe it down.  It was late, Doug Heim left my shop about 10:00 p.m. so I just snapped the shot and came home to post it up.

The outer ring was T6-6061 and 1.25" thick, the pipe was sch 80 and about 0.375" thick

Yes very nice. I'm not trying to dis-credit your skill if you can prove it then fine. You have some nice welding skills there.

I used to ali weld pump casings as an apprentice. I wish we had mobiles with cameras then. I could show you come great stuff then I'll try and get hold of my old shop and see if they still had some of the photos of the work i did.

I don't get much specialized welding done lately. I'll post up a picture of the test piece i did for the acid plant vessel. I think it still lying around somewhere. If i could i'd get the welds we done in the vessel but that might end up in me been melted by sulfuric acid  :P

Have you any other welds other than ali. Some stainless shots would be good

Finally back at work this week. Had a few off due to my stupidity on a lathe. few stitches in my finger

Yeah i know what you mean. I've seen some nasty stuff from accidents and machinery. I got complacent on my little lathe i have at home. That resulted in an injury and a lesson learnt. The bigger ones at work i follow a strict routine and it stops me from getting hurt.

It doesn't matter what machine it is or what size it is. It can still bite ya.

That was done on a weld positioner correct?

Acutally no. It was done in 6G. I don't know if its the same terms or no but 6G in aus is a pipe weld that is lock into position on a 30 degree angle. That run is along the top part of the pipe. But it doesn't change much in consistency. We had to do the same welds to the acid vessel so it can't change much. Its all TIG as well nothing else. It took me a few hours to do. Even more for the vessel. 3 welders almost 3 days of welding. My shoulders have never been so sore
