Thought I'd start a thread on this last week ends carnage rebuild. More later.
-
What? This is like a for sale without pics and $$$. LMAO LMAO LMAO
-
LOL!!! gotcha!
-
No time to be posting. Get this thing back on all four for SA.
-
Wheels,tires,heims,4130 tube etc,all ordered and should start showing up fiday or monday. All depends on waterjetter now. I have everything coming but for one piece of 4130 3/8" plate for the midboard hub mounts. Can't find it close enough to not get hammered with freight. Likely need to go with an alternative.
-
Some more bent metal. All front arms are swept back about 2" Must build all. Due to the bent rear upper arm that took most of the hit along with the wheel I'm taking the opportunity to narrow the rear 4" each side. Thought I was going to need new axles but this morning I find that I can shorten the slip axles I have relatively easily with a lathe and some TIG work. Pics later tonite on that. If the tube gets here for the arms tomorrow or Fri at the latest I got a real shot at pulling this off for St.A.
-
If this is a true "resurrection" does that mean the car will now be a zombie?
-
Hope its got
9 lives 8 lives. Fabr's gonna need it. Thats was a hell of a kiss on the ass.
-
well that's some damage but could've been a lot worse!!

+1 Just be glad you were able to walk away from it. ;) ;) ;)
-
+1 to all above. I'm very pleased with the way the chassis held up. So far as I can tell at this point all I have to do is replace 1 pair of tabs on the chassis. Well that and a complete set of front and rear a arms, both front uprights and both read midboard mounts. eyes drowning 8)
-
I'm guessing you'll change front arm design since you had issues prior, but how about rear arms. While we want everything to be bullit proof, arm are pretty easy to replace. Much more so than whacking the frame, wish the hubs would've done better. But if you get to crazy overbuilt on the outside stuff damage will transfer inward. And thats where we sit, Keep it on the outside. You'll get it done, you've got a weekend or two, right? rofl
-
A-arms appear to have done their job. They absorbed all of the impact and didn't transfer too much to either you or the chassis.
-
IMO,front and rear uppers did their job perfectly as Grimm points out. Lower fronts will be somewhat redesigned but not much With the mods that were done I feel anything stronger would just bend the chassis. Most of the load of this impact was front to rear. Saved the chassis ,again, a arm was not overbuilt. Now ,the lower rears, those are some strong mofos. Got them off last night ,neither were bent at all. Luckily I made the frame in that area very stout also. I am redesigning the midboard mount to allow a single ,larger, heim on the outer end. Will make it a lot easier to adjust rear toe out. .
Waterjetter said he'd try to run parts tonight. All but 2 of them tho since that material won't get here till Tuesday likely. IF all goes well I might have all done but for that by then and have a shot at St.A..
-
Carl, none of the Gear-One hubs were damaged at all. Even though I am not a fan of them they did the job admirably.
-
I guess buying a bunch of plastic from the waterjet guys over the years got me some favors. All pieces are done today but for the midboard plates since material is not here. He said he'd get them done same day as soon as I get the plate to him. I MIGHT just pull this off. All depends on freight lines now.
-
Can't believe the plates bent so easy since there made from unobtanium. That stuff is near impossible to bend.
If anyone can do it you can. Should we do a rain dance to slow work. Although lately rain has improved my business. Slow on sunny days. Wtf.
-
I got the rain day ,sort of ,today. My son, right hand man,had a pre arranged golf effin tournament today and tomorrow. Kills a day and a half for me right there but I did take a bonzai run to Tulsa to pick up the wj pieces. Usually a 4 hour turn around. I made it in 3 1/4. LOL! Off to TIG for a few hours now.
-
Master Master Master Go Go Go. You can do it. I'm helping Dave with is rear carrier. I think we mite make it. Got all the bent stuff cut off today and cleaned it up some. Ready to make the template to plasma cut the new shock mounts out. King is getting every thing for his shock in for a Saturday delivery. He is cleaning up and greasing his cv's tonight. Will be tight but we think we can do it.
-
Got both front uprights about 90% welded tonite. Been welding since 5:30. Finally hands went to shit just now. Just had to stop. Lots of weld time in those effers. If tube had shown up today I'd have the front back together this weekend but I'll just shift to the rear and go as far as I can. Probably fill a couple 12 hour days with that anyway.
-
Got David's rear carrier done. Getting ready to take it over and test fit before finial weld. This is all free hand plasma cutting. No water jet here move on.
Here is the before and after.
-
what else damaged on David's rail? After this he may give a pass on the mantis out do. Carry on, and get packed!

Well, just got in from a 17 hour day in the shop but uprights are done, lower rear a arms are done, front a arm ferrules are made. Will make bungs for front arms ,replace an a arm mount on the rear and fab rear lower shock mounts tomorrow. If only the tube was here I'd likely have new front arms tomorrow but that ain't gonna happen.
-
If you do not get it together and can't make the trip, we are going to have fun without you!!
I am checking the tranny fluid today in mine and I will be ready. I looked at the 10 day forcast on weather and this year it doesn't look like snow. (89 degrees)
-
Well David ain't a happy camper. Ordered up his new shock shaft and stuff Friday. Had it sent overnight next day Saturday delivery $148.00 ups. Opened up the box and he had ordered the wrong shaft size. kick. Going to have to do it again Monday for a Tuesday delivery. His welder got the new bearing carrier all welded up last night and his forword trailing arm mounts all redone yesterday. I think he can still pull it off. I'll be back over there next week helping. Mine is allready to load in the trailer. Need to check the air in the trailer spare and pump the 50 gal of VP110 into the trailers buggy tank. OH and get my new flags put on the the light sabers.
-
Tubing and new paddles just showed up. Waiting for new rear wheel, brake lines and plate for mids. Off to the shop I go.
-
It LIVES!!!! Back on all 4 with it's new narrower ass. Looks better and will go in trailer with dirt tires on it. No more skinnies needed to load or laying around in the way while at camp. Been working nonstop for the last 10 days 14-16 hours a day.No time for pics yet. Gotta go load and hit the road to St.Anthonies later today. Pics later, like when we return. LOL!!!!

Glad you are done. I feel for you on the trashing part. I had to order a new air filter for the meet up at Coral Pink. Phew! I am exhausted.

Sorry to once again not get to dune with you. thumb down thumb down Oh well, maybe someone will let me mooch a place to stay this winter for a week at Glamis. ;D ;D ;D

DId I mention that today I find the Gear-One HD rack is broken? I figured it was just bent. NOOOooooo ,it is broken in 3 pieces. MY spreader didn't break or bend tho! Fortunately Fast has a G-1 rack at his shop .Sort of on the way. I'll pick it up in morning, put it on tomorrow night in the trailer and be ready to ride Wednesday morning at St.A.. I have a very big pile of parts from this little flight I took.

Thanks ,it's been a long time since I thrashed this much. Now I remember why I quit racing......................... One thing about it though,I now know how fast I really can build a car if I want to. Not a hell of a lot more to do for a full car than what I had to do to get this thing back on it's feet. I built about third a car in 10 very long days. I WON'T do it that fast again but I know that 6 months is ample time to build the desert car ,maybe being ready for desert running this winter when we head south. That's my new mission. Life's short and I'm getting old. thumb down
