What size Heims are you using?
« on: December 26, 2008, 01:09:10 PM »
Post it up boys and girls!  What size heim ends do you think are sufficient.  I know everyone is building something a little different, but I am looking at a two seater, MC power, 1000-1300 lbs, 31" tires.

This is what I am thinking.

5-link rear - 5/8" everywhere

Steering links - 5/8"

Inner A-arms - 5/8"

Outer A-arm/Spindle mounts - 3/4"

I also feel that all the 5/8" ends could be bushed down to use 1/2" grade 8 hardware.

The 3/4" would have high misalignment spacers that reduce to a 1/2" bolt as well.

Set me straight!!

Oops!  I just realized that I am not a big hitter........  Can someone move this to the MC power section.  Please?

Thanks Spec!

Done ;D
I think on the 5 link 3/4 would be better...Lotta stress back there
1/2'' on the steering should be more than adequate, and your prolly in the Ball park on the rest...But my buggies are 1/2 the size/weight and the 460's 1/4 the weight

Hmmmm.... I think your right.  Just as much or more stress than the spindle mounts.  Even though it seems divided out more ways.  Of course if the shock is mounted to the bearing carrier, the links don't see that load.

I have seen/ridden in fullsize 4-seaters with 5/8" all around.

I used 3/4 on my drag car 4-link with 1,500 HP (nitrous) and 2,500 lbs, so twice the weight.  They were separated a bit more.  ;D ;D ;D

It depends also on whether you wish to use alloy or carbon bodies. I tend to overbuild so I use 3/4 on all but the spindles-7/8"  alloy,kevlar/teflon.

I run all 3/4 with 3/4 by 1/2 misalignment's except for my trailing arm pivots where I have straight 3/4s. And my tie rods are 1/2.

I think the 4130 5/8 heims are more than sufficent for the 5 links, what size tubes you planning for the link bars? 3/4 heims for steering, maybe even 7/8 bushed to 1/2" if you want more angle...

My front end is 3/4 with the 1/2 misalignment bushings. My rear is a 6 link all with 1/2. If I were doing it now I would do the rear all 5/8 atleast.

I have had no problems with my 1/2 heims in 4 years. But I don't hit it that hard. Although I have been told otherwise.

Okay, new question.  If I use 7/8-1" with high-misalignment bushings for the spindles, what do you do for the tierod?  The inside is no problem, but on the outside, any smaller size with misalignment spacers will not give as much angular travel, so you will be limited by the tie rod angle and not the A-arm to spindle angle.   ???  ???

Yes i can only get the 1" heim, the uniball is less expensive than the heim plus it doesnt use high mis adapter, it is qa1 the body is cast tho, I will look up the specs, should be more than capable of the job, teflon kevlar race as well...
