Air bags first.
"There can be no divided allegiance here.  Any man who says he is an American,
but something else also, isn't an American at all.  We have room for but one
flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is
the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a
loyalty to the American people."

have you considered the sensatrac load leveler shocks with the helper springs on them?  I have had a few sets on my truck and I like them.  I tow a lot of shit.

My trailer weighs 2300lbs empty and I have no trouble tooling down the highway with a 3000lbs skid loader or 5000lb vehicle on the trailer behind my Dakota.  I know I have well exceeded it's stated towing capacity on many occasions, but as long as everything is stable and I got the power to pull it, I'm gonna keep on keepin on.  Tongue weight is always correct, or damn close to it when I am loading.  That's the key.  Oh, and a nice level trailer.

Speaking of airbags you COULD just bolt Artie and trojan under the van.

I think I'd air bag it or air shock it 1st...
As for the 1 ton dually.....
Extra long chassis so you can woodgas it...other wise with the price of gas going back up...you'll have lots of time to look at it in the driveway ;D

Air bags work and are a proven technology. Look at the new big rigs tons of them on air. A good friend of DS and mine has a 1/2 ton GMC and pulls a 24 H&H enclosed trailer from here in Lincoln to LS. He has an WD hitch but as still not happy with the way the rear of the truck carried the weight. He had air bags put in and after his first trip down he never looked back. He loves them. Let the pressure out when empty no effect on ride quality, have to haul a load fill them back up and go. I am going to put them on my 3/4 ton for that extra stability under heavy load. Cheaper than a new truck. I strongly recommend the air bag. I would spend the extra money and go air bag instead of air shock. Air shock requires x pressure at all times to keep from harm. I would also plumb them in side independent. So your air is not able to flow between the sides. IE get on a side hill and the low side gets lower. \

I have seen the air bags work for Allan on his rig and am sold. He will be at October sand in your beer fest I am sure.

Just a extra note always be sure your tires are able to carry the load your new spring can support.

All you pep's using air bags.  What would the life of them be in terms of rubber rot and the such?  Two years three what?
I am thinking of installing a set on my one ton to help counter the wave motion on rolling bumpy hi way's. I pull a 5ver loaded wighing in at about 17.000 LB's.  I think that is 7711.2 KG for you down under guy's.
