Title: WTH MSD????
Post by: fabr on April 17, 2022, 10:50:04 AM
Last fall I pulled buggy into shop after a fun countryside ride. All was good. Yesterday I decided to get after a few things lie oil change and running the valves. Then I went to start it and the damn thing would not hit a lick. Totally dead ,no spark. WTF???? The coil died just sitting there. $175  for a coil that died over the winter without even having any juice to it at all.   beathorse.gif~c200 5:  At least I didn't wait till the last minute like usual. New coil will be here tomorrow. :nw

this sound like a heaven sent to me. no way would you have found a coil at the dunes when  it gave out on the sand . Glenn looking after you on this one. :)

thats just bizarre. hmmmm, well quality has suffered in many many products.

Wanna talk bizarre???  I got the new coil and electrically it checked out identical to the old one. First thought was WTF. Is this new one bad ?  Hooked it up and engine roared to life. Testing primary and secondary resistance and for shorts to ground doesn't work on these things. Only way to check is to try a known good coil in it's place. I had read that but couldn't quite believe it till now.

best way to get you to buy spares to keep in your tool box!   ;)

i wonder what burns out in side ? something has to if secondary and primary ohm out fine.

Primary ohm spec is .07 ohms. Almost nothing and my meter set on0.000 range read out as 0.000 on both coils. Secondary read 300 on bad coil and 200 on new coil. With such low resistance spec for primary  I guess the windings could short out anywhere and still read in spec yet not be able to saturate coil to fire. At least on an msd ignition you can manually trigger the ignition to test box and coil easily.

that is a plus to be able manually trigger for testing.....still wierd it failed while not in use  :m

Weird as all get out.  All any coil is is a pair of windings . A person would think that the thing would need to be powered up to have an electrical failure but obviously that is not the case. Only thing that makes sense is that it failed immediately at  power up .It was working just fine at last use.

I'm thinking big dave has it right. Glenn was either looking out for me or he was being mischievous and effin with me for grins and giggles. If that is the case he was still looking out for me making it happen in the shop where I could work on/diagnose it easily..  :m :nw

i can see both when it comes to glenn  :m def better to know at home.

i agree it had to happen at key up or it failed as you shut it off last. both wierd none the less.
