Title: subaru justy buggy
Post by: Baloo on August 02, 2009, 02:22:50 PM
l was practically given a subaru justy and couldent resist taking it apart and biulding something else out of the bits,

you can find the first bit of the biuld up here
http://subarujusty.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&thread=2684 (http://subarujusty.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&thread=2684)
untill l can copy it over to here

so this is where l am at

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Fjustyrollcageshape005.jpg&hash=4588391ab0552c4d614c31918c9861b7170c8709)

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2FFRAME2.jpg&hash=57ee92707072ecec7b1cdae1929c3876a1a10399)

as you can see l have started thinking about the shape of the tube work, but what l have drawn dosent really jump out and grab me, anyone else care to suggest a shape or draw onto the pic for me ?

Andy

I'm kinda biased, but a tin top Sammy shape would look pretty cool!  More squared off would also keep a roll-over from being a multiple roll over in many cases too....

For a bunch of money we can make that grave digger body come to life. ::) ;D ;D Be damn cool tho!

l do like the grave digger, nice looking bodyshell but not really suitable for the woods, can you imagine the damage it would sustain bouncing of the trees  :o
the same applys to this body l have
(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Frockcrawlerbody.jpg&hash=f34f3b087ec2589f017049ad63051fa3bc15c763)

shame really since its the same wheelbase as the buggy ;D but fitting something with a full body limits the use a bit unless you are going to trash it,
same applies to the sammy body idea it will get hung up on the trees, l think l ought to keep the tube work as small as possible so as to lessen the chances of it catching on branches etc ?
dont get me wrong l like sammys l got a few now :-[ like 3 lwb and 3 swb  ::)
do you get jimnys over there like this one

I'm not saying the whole body, just the shape.  The width would be the same as any other design, just instead of the regular buggy shape, it would be more square, gives you more space out back too.

And no, we don't have the Jimny's, here anyway.  Are they solid front axle factory?  I think the last Suzuki's here with solid fronts were the 80's Sammy's.  I could be wrong though.

Funny, I just noticed the other one rolled on its side in the second pic!

hi Islander

yes they are solid front axle,  coil springs and a radius arm at all 4 corners , they are very good offroad which l put down to the light wieght as the axle travel is not great in stock form, the green one was mine till l end over ended it and wrecked the body shell,  l still have the chassis  which can be seen hanging on the wall in the pics taken in my workshop, one day l will put it all back together in to some sort of tube buggy  using a side kick 2000cc engiine and auto box

not very flexy as they come but still good offroad

we would never get away with towing a trailer like that over here, max towable wieght is 700kg l think
l still have my diesel tracker for getting around the fields, very good for that
but throw a tool box in the back and its full and over loaded  ;D

l have replaced the girl friends swb petrol tracker witha lwb 4 door turbo diesel, the engine is a mazda unit that suzuki fitted for a few years to the lwb auto's, l wouldent have spoken very highly of the mazda powered tracker untill we had this one  :-[ how wrong you can be, l am very impressed with it, you live and learn dont you

Back to the buggy, Justy buggy, Juggy, whatever  ;D What are you using for the suspension?  The Justy stuff?  I can't really tell from the pics.  And are you planning a rear mount rad?
Title: Re: subaru justy buggy
Post by: Baloo on August 07, 2009, 02:52:17 PM
right back to the juggy then

yes all stock justy suspension, l am trying to see how cheap l can biuld a buggy so l want to use as much as l can that came with the car,

l made a jig of the floorpan of the car (https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Fjustyjig060.jpg&hash=8b8bc0e6b380d75e0059eab0d96f703f2eb28559)

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Fjustyjig009.jpg&hash=c58bfcf91c44a23d069f6dcb11b5dead6a06b537)

once the jig was off the car l knocked up a chassis from it

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Fjustychassis003.jpg&hash=21f7632b3e656c8a4f83e4dc852225904dd94b95)

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Fjustychassis3019.jpg&hash=94969be86b2b989b2322b85fedad198814685d9c)

in went the engine, box and suspension from the justy

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Fjustychassis3010.jpg&hash=1b41c917f7b2d1646cd5f64ef17e7dc3cd06e676)

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Fjustychassis3015.jpg&hash=e28f109ff25b8f233018604e78d05a148ef9a83b)

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Fjustyrollingchassis023.jpg&hash=bbfbcb4ae9b1f2f05435d0c1bee2dddc4d16f7fc)

its the usual 1 step forward and 2 steps back at the moment, l decided to rotate the engine and box to get the rear prop to face uphill a bit this ment the engine mounts l made the day before are now useless, l must learn to just tack stuff up at this stage  ::) so the engine is now welded in solid for the moment  :o
l did consider putting the rad behind the seats as l dont want it up front catching all the mud, however at the moment l am thinking about mounting it behind the engine as l seem to have a space of about 18" or so there

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Fjuggy.jpg&hash=d6853e60f797aeafb932a62e66f536626776869d)

l have been playing around with the tube a bit tonight trying to find a shape l like, in the pics below its held together with sticky tape

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Fjustyframe002.jpg&hash=192fedcfbc55261bab443ee7396aff439deba946)

l havent really decided on the final shape yet just messing with ideas, like the strut top plates l have had cut l could run the tube either inside or on the outside of these either would probally work but you get a completly different appearence with either

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Fjustyframe003.jpg&hash=4dea42e9588d0c0a4fb5e7edf98ada7be981930a)

I like it  ;D I kinda like the look of the tubes running on the outside of the plates.  Would you get enough airflow with the rad behind the motor?  I was kinda thinking of it kind of up and on an angle (like a WRX intercooler, only not as bad an angle) with duct work to have the hot air exit on the sides of the buggy.  I don't know how cold it gets where you are, but you could probably rig up a way to direct the hot air from the rad into the pass. compartment in the winter, if you go year round.  Kinda in this area,

yes its an easy way of keeping all the dimensions correct and yet so simple, cant say as l have seen it done on the net anywhere before although l am sure it must have been as nothing is new went it comes to automotive,
one of the best parts is that the jig is availalbe to use again and again, each time incorperating all those litte ideas you have after you have already biult something,  there are 2 people waiting to use the jig as we speak  ;D could be a whole fleet of juggies soon :o
done some more today will try and get some pics up latter

might have some big radius curves rolled and try and make it look a bit different ?

some of the bits on there are just temporary like the steering rack mounts, and the pedal box is held on with exhaust clamps so as l can move it about till l am happy with its position, need to make an adjustable column next to help with access

you are welcome to take it for a spin Spec, just give me a shout next time you are passing through the uk  ;D
or l will shoot some video as soon as its out and about, l know its not quite the same is it  ::)

Islander
the wheel base is 75"  the width across the tyres ( tires ? ) 68"  and the overall length is 104"

getting down to quad size bit by bit, next step is to make up some new engine mounts and then get it running as it is and weed out the wire l dont need

l step forward and 2 steps back comes to mind, l mounted the engine and box up onto its final engine mountings today  and guess what, the brake master cylinder just rubs the altenator  ::)
so l have had to remove the tube that the pedal box hangs from and make a new on that swings back 2" ho hum, good job l hadent finished welded it in,

been toying with the idea of mounting the rad behind the engine, the gearbox is quite low and gives a good "view" of the rad from the front, although l might yet mount it up front conventionaly but think it will fill up with mud and be very vunrable there

some of the stuff is just tempoary like the rack mount, pedal box suport etc

the exhaust exits on the front of the motor, right?  I don't know if you would get enough airflow to keep it from overheating with it mounted there.  I wouldn't mount it up front either, maybe going to have to be a rear mount??

l still havent made any decisions on where the rad is going to live, what l have made is the transmission tunnel, well 2 of them first was tall and narrow

after l had made that one l decided to widen it up a little in case l did want to fit the rad at the front behind the engine, that way the fans can suck through the rad and the hot air can be expelled down the transmission tunnel

Put up a pic of your radius bender please.

hi masterfabr,  sorry no radius bender, all the bits of tube l am using are left overs and offcuts from a job l had in where l sent out a load of tube to these people for forming
http://www.barnshaws.com/tube_bending.php (http://www.barnshaws.com/tube_bending.php)
have a look at some of the pics of the stuff the roll  :o
in fact l have just about run out of offcuts so l am going to buy in some rolled tube on different radiuses such as 3m,4m,5m and 6m, its just so useful to have around

Islander
havent really worked out the shape in detail, have a rough idea, might have a go at mocking it up with plastic tube
