Title: Still moving on
Post by: fastcorvairs on June 25, 2010, 07:34:22 AM
Will we are on the move again.  After a week in St Anthony we moved on to Coos Bay, from there we went back up the cost to Winchester Bay.  left there and came down Thur the big red wood trees and ended up in Yuba City CA for the night.  Getting ready to hit the road and get a bottle of sand from Sand Mountain NV.  then on to Coral Pink.  Sent Yummi and email this am and told him we should be there by the week end.  Would be fun to run with him.  I'll get lots of pictures on soon as we get back.  After we leave Pink we will head up and check out Little Sahara Sand Mountain.   FY'I any of you Guys with fourwheelers or single seaters want a dream vacation go to Coos Bay.  them trails are for you.  We got to run Hi speed on the beach for miles.  Fourth gear pinned on the revlimiter.

Will we sailed down Thur the big red woods in CA and on to Sand Mountain NV.  I did not have time to unload the big green pickle but got a ride up Sand Mountain with Jerry in his subi car. Third gear 12 pounds of boost at 4000 RPM.  Dang is that a hill or what.  At the top the car's and trailers looked like match boxes at the bottom.  Reloaded Jerry's and Clark's car and off we go to Little Saraha UT.  Spent one hour at Little Saraha UT.  We did not want to pay the day fee but the BLM people said if we could drive back to The big dunes and get our bottel of sand and get back to the gate in one hour they would refund our money.  We did it.  Five miles of gravel road at 25 MPH in and out got our bottle of sand and back on the road to Coral Pink.  We will be on the sand buy 9:00 this morning.  Pictures to at ten.

Hell I would like a picture too but the guy holding the camera and dancing and laghing would not let me down load the card onto my laptop. He'll have to post them here.  Kept saying that I would delete the card and then there would be no evidence at all. Now would I do something like that.  eyes

Ya seem to have been a small reverse problem.  Had none.  Lost it at Idaho.  Got myself into a tight spot at Coral Pink and had to be roped up and have the front end pulled around a bit to get me out of the spot. Seems that the guy that had the tow rope forgot his camera and did not have his cell phone on him ether.  The second time that the pictures got taken I hit a small vertical hill that was only about ten feet tall but at 80*and soft at to slow of speed and got hung up.  Only had to get out and push back with the help of the camera man.  ;D  Had to wight for him to stop dancing and taking pictures before we could roll it back off the hill.  I told him that I had done that on propose so to give him a photo shot.  He didn't believed me for some reason.    :o :o eyes eyes

All in all we had some problems but had a great time doing it. Had the best camp spot at Coral Pink.  Will for sure go back some day. I am down loading all the pictures from my laptop now and will have lots of pictures to post.  I'll put them on my face book account and post the link here.

I did have some major problems with the trailer and got run off I-40 east of Amarillo TX buy a 18 wheel truck in bumper to bumper traffic.  Had to stand on the binders and run off onto the shoulder when he come over onto me at 70 MPH.  Don't know what the deal was but it could have been bad if I had not got slowed down and on the side.  Lucky that there was enough room behind me that the guy fallowing me had time to slow to.  Never did catch him to get numbers.  Buy the the time I got my rig back in to traffic and up to speed he was gone.
As for the trailer we were coming out of Cedar City UT and I dam near lost the rear gear on my trailer. The shackle nuts had came lose and the lower springs turned side ways and tore into the tire.  By the time I got it stopped It had dug into 10 ply's of the 14 on the tire.  Had to happen on the Interstate to.  No fun changing a tire and getting and axle back in place on a four lane interstate with traffic going buy at 80 MPH.  Don't try going thur Zion National Park in UT with more the 50 foot of trailer.  They turned me away and said that I was to lone for the the roads.  Had to go way down into Arazona to get to Coral Pink.

In the gallery section on this site we have a mass upload feature.  Might want to re-size them as well - they will upload faster  - in case you don't know - highlight all the files - right click and select "re-size pictures"  (This assumes Vista or Windows 7)

5,450 miles on the truck.  681.25 Gals of diesel fuel at and average price of 3.00 =$2,043.75 Best tank was about 9 worst tank was 7. Total weight of trailer and truck was 24,500 LB's. Really did good I had set my budget for fuel at 2500.  Worst stretch of road was Donner Pass at Reno NV and old hyway 50 from Fallon NV to Utah was indeed the longest and loneliest. Couple of time along that road I was wishing I had packed a spare can of diesel fuel.

That's after Fast did some upgrades on his truck, otherwise it probably would have been around 5 to 6 mpg. Those 6.7 cummins are some thirsty pigs. Nothing like the old 5.9 cummins. 8) 8) 8) 8)

Will the other dodge I was pulling with is and 01 5.9 and he was pulling about the same weight and he got about 15 to 16.  Yes the 6.7's are a thirsty pig.  Most of the Dodge boy's that are bragging about high fuel milage are driving two wheel drive 3/4 ton single wheel trucks. Pulling 8.000 or less.

I was being polite. The goof balls around here try to claim 20+. I think our inbreds don't know how to figure mileage.  I get 8-12 pulling trailer/truck of approx 20K with the '07 duramax dually . All around towing of approx 9.
Title: Re: Still moving on
Post by: Yummi on July 09, 2010, 07:23:04 AM
No goof ball here.

With the 5.9 2500 4x4 chip and filter i got 21mpg around town / highway.  Towing was less - about 13 - 14 mpg with 13,000#.  New truck with 6.7 gets about 16 - 17 town / highway.  About 10mpg towing.  Gonna do the dpf delete in about a month.  Hope that helps.

The 13k is a rough guess for total.  I never ran the scales.

Been there done that. Do the complete turbo back and unplug the EGR while your at it.  I found that doing the EGR Cooler delete was a waist of time. Not needed.
Be sure to get a good tuner.  I am using the Edge and I hear that the Smarty is better for the 6.7 Dodge.
