More to come tomorrow...

Cool! We still need to talk about a body for mine maybe. You coming this way for LS later this year?
-
I thought you where moving? Shouldn't you be packing or something? hh:
-
Pacman: Got obligations to fulfill...
Fabber: I hope to yes, well see how the move and new job goes...
-
The first step is to shoot the gelcoat on, I use a dump gun, it goes on quick and cleans up easy, got to let the hardener activate, Once the finger doesn't leave a print i start laying, All time is dependent on temp and catalyst ratio... If you try and mix the gelcoat to hot, it will lift off the mold before you get the glass laid, I mixed today in 60 degree at 1.5%, max is 2%...
(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi446.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq182%2Fbuggyfabber%2F001640x480-1.jpg&hash=0f0433e8a1e38ed806613abea91d685f14a7711e)
(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi446.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq182%2Fbuggyfabber%2F002640x480-1.jpg&hash=46050dd340681a29f2bfcc9d3ddd165167d61a6c)
The roof gets done in 3 steps, it is a bitch to lay glass upside down, possible but not worth the risk... I first lay one side...
(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi446.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq182%2Fbuggyfabber%2F003640x480.jpg&hash=1f46685c4dfcd2c4b931c4cbb4cd0efc72312195)
I trim all the excess after the resin gels, it is almost hards but still soft enuff to cut with a razr blade, Limited time window..
Next over on its top side....
(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi446.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq182%2Fbuggyfabber%2F005640x480.jpg&hash=642fc4f34a7a46cad8caaa01fe4f7846e470386d)
Again i trim the edges, I also over lap the first lay, Got to be carefull, the first side is still warm, heat cures resin, lay that last and roll it out first....
Now i flip to the last side, I put a clamp on the first side as it is up in the air now, and i dont want it to loosen from the mold.... Oops, didnt get a pic of the other side...Here is another of the first side tho...
(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi446.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq182%2Fbuggyfabber%2F004640x480.jpg&hash=28f63e502d98c7fcd565ca339b901eb531511e24)
Then i will trim that, and let it set overnight, Tomorrow ill need to take the razr blade and slide it down the edge again, this will make a nice clean edge, When I initally cut it hairs will kinda smere a bit, Not a big deal, it just doesnt cut real clean till its hard, But cant cut the thickness hard either...I will then hit the edges with a orbital sander, and paint the inside while in the mold, saves taping... More to come later....

I have never done much with fiber glass. Keep the pictures and info coming. Did you make the molds?

No i did not, they originally came from Drakart, they were transfered with the jigs etc to Hawk motorsports, then Livewire purchased the rights to build the car and all of the jigs etc... This is for the formula cross only...

Glassing takes some serious skill to do RIGHT. Looks great Bug. ;D
-
It doesn't take any skill to fxxk it up tho.... ;D I have threw away a few pieces, fortunately nothing big.... ;D
-
Don't over activate it and give it plenty of time to cure before painting. It will be more flexible and keep the chances of cracking to a minimum. ;)
-
I wish Bug had stuck with the hot rods ;D
That was some really cool f-glass stuff :o
-
And the finished product...

Good job Bug!! Parts look nice.
I hate fiberglass...... makes me itch just thinking about it. Actually the wet part isn't so bad, it's when it turns into razor blades and needles. :P :P :P
-
Well..................................... I feel like a dipshit. I thought it was the first time you had glassed anything. Sorry Bug. :-[
-
Looks great by the way.

+1 - you are a dip.... wait wait wait - no need to go there.
You gave good input on a thread re: fiberglass - Pea brains like me can soak it all in even if Bug is way advanced. Thanks for the input.
-
Not way advanced by any means, hell i learned old school and I do it this way currently... Far from advanced, maybe between Novice and kinda novice... ;D

Not mine, some guy on the fiberglass forum, he is just building the plug for something to do, and may mold it eventually...
-
WHat it? That's 2 killer plugs!
-
Awesome work. Bug do you use a chop gun?
Reminds me of the days working at Carver Yachts back in the day.

FG mat or cloth?
-
FG mat or cloth?
Mat only, cloth is to hard to fxxk with.... It is fine for laminating foam and stuff in boat hulls but cloth will print thru to the outside when against gelcoat......
-
-
Yeah, I've been using 3OZ mat for this job. I tried a top layer of heavy cloth the other weekend....... I won't be doing that on anything with corners agian.
I prefer 1.5oz mat in layers, wets out fast and lays corners nicely...

Boy, did I get an education today. Bug's been making an airbox for our buggies, and a couple of days ago said he needed to take a break from sanding on the plug. So I say I'll come out a sand on it for a while. How hard can it be. Pretty damn hard, it turns out! Bondo, sand, bondo, sand, oh shit, sanded through the bondo, more bondo, sand, not smooth, more bondo, sand.
Now, being a rookie, Bug was real patient, and after awhile, it was clear why he needed a break from it. I hope the glassing goes smoother than making the plug!
-
Well a few more hours of finish sanding and i will be fiberglassing the air box... sand, prime, sand, fill, prime, about 40 times, lol...
-
have you heard of air craft dacron it comes in diffrent thicknesses and if you apply heat to it ....it shrinks
and draws up tight you just have to glue it down i am going to give it a shot for body panels
it should wet out nice and be strong
